The Electric Smelter is a mid-game crafting machine in Factorio that converts raw iron ore and copper ore into their respective refined plates using grid electricity instead of fuel. It represents the pivotal moment where a player's factory sheds its dependence on coal and oil, shifting toward a cleaner, more scalable energy infrastructure powered by nuclear reactors or advanced solar arrays. Unlike the Stone Furnace or Steel Furnace, the Electric Smelter has no fuel slot and no smokestack emissions, making it both faster in practice (no fuel logistics) and visually distinct with its glowing blue electric arcs. Lore & Background

In the early days of the alien invasion, the player's makeshift workshop relied on Stone Furnaces belching black smoke over the forest floor. Every plate of iron was a small negotiation with a coal stack, and every copper wire demanded a careful pour of fuel. The discovery of the Electric Smelting blueprint changed that calculus entirely. Suddenly the smelters could sit in long, silent rows, their only output a faint blue shimmer along the connecting poles, and the air above the factory stayed clear. The Electric Smelter occupies a specific place in the factory's evolution. It is the bridge between the fuel-burning era and the fully electrified one. Players who remember their first row of smelters running without a single coal item in the input slot often describe the feeling as the factory finally breathing. The alien spawners still circle overhead, the biters still crawl from the dirt, but the ground below is no longer choked with soot. As the factory matures, the Electric Smelter becomes almost invisible—just another blue box in a sea of identical machines, fed by a mining drill on one side and an assembler on the other, its only visible sign of work the occasional flicker of current along the electric pole. She pressed her thumb against the warm housing of the nearest smelter. The alien spawners had been quiet for three days now—maybe they were regrouping, maybe they were simply out of range. Either way, the factory had to keep growing. She pulled up the schematic on her tablet: forty more smelters, two additional mining drills for the iron deposit, a new substation to feed the eastern row. "Alright," she muttered, tapping the build queue. "Let's see how far the current carries us."

Reader's Guide

Inputs: Iron ore and/or Copper ore (from mining drills), plus 10 energy per item drawn from the electric grid. Output: Iron plates or Copper plates, one every 2 seconds per smelter. Required setup: an Electric Smelter placed adjacent to an Electric Pole, with the pole connected to a power source (solar panels, wind turbines, or a nuclear reactor chain). Upstream dependencies: Mining drills + conveyors or inserters feeding ore into the smelter; a functioning power grid with sufficient capacity. Downstream: Iron plates feed the Steel Furnace, assemblers (for circuits, processing units, etc.), and construction of further machines. Copper plates feed Copper Wire, which feeds Electronic Circuits and Processing Units. Optimal ratio: For a balanced plate line, match smelter count to your plate demand. A common early-mid benchmark is 1 mining drill (iron) feeding 4–6 Electric Smelters, with a matching copper line. Scaling the factory means scaling the grid in lockstep. As the factory grows, the Electric Smelter chain scales linearly: more drills, more smelters, more power. The key insight is that unlike fuel smelters, there is no fuel logistics chain to manage, so the only scaling constraint is electricity and ore throughput. Nuclear power removes the energy ceiling almost entirely, leaving ore mining as the sole growth lever.
