Steel is the foundational alloy of Factorio's industrial mid-game, forged by combining iron plates with coal in a dedicated Steel Furnace. It represents the leap from raw smelting to true metallurgy—the moment your factory stops being a pile of iron plates and starts becoming a civilization. Every advanced system in the game hinges on steel: circuits, wheels, furnaces, pumps, turbines, and ultimately the rocket parts that carry you off-world. Without a steady stream of steel, your factory stalls at the threshold of complexity.

Lore & Background

In the early days of the colony, iron is all you know. You smelt ore, bolt plates together, and call it progress. But the moment you unlock the Steel recipe, something shifts. The Steel Furnace is a different beast—slower, hungrier, but producing a material that simply cannot be faked. It is the first sign that your operation is no longer a survival camp. Steel is the connective tissue of every advanced system. The Advanced Circuit that powers your research, the Steel Wheels that let your logistics trains run faster, the Electric Furnace that triples your smelting output, the Heat Exchanger and Steam Turbine that will one day feed your nuclear grid—all of them whisper the same demand: more steel. The factory grows around this single alloy the way a city grows around a river. There is a particular satisfaction in watching a long line of Steel Furnaces glow orange in the twilight, each one belching a single steel ingot every seven and a half seconds, feeding an infinite downstream hunger. No one panicked. That was the thing about steel. You never panicked about steel. You rerouted. You opened the backup smelter. You let the iron plates pile up in the buffer chest like a small mountain of grey coins while the repair team crawled under the broken furnace with wrenches and swearing. Forty minutes later, the line hummed back to life. Five plates in, one coal in, and out came the steel—warm, heavy, perfect. The conveyor belt shuddered and carried it onward to the circuit factory, to the wheel assembly, to the rocket-part station three kilometres down the line where a single, lonely part was being built for a launch that would not happen for another two hundred hours. The supervisor sipped her cold coffee, watched the orange glow of a hundred furnaces, and thought: *not yet. Not yet. But soon.*

Reader's Guide

The steel chain is deceptively simple: mine Iron Ore, smelt it into Iron Plates in an Iron Smelter, then feed five plates plus one Coal into a Steel Furnace to yield one Steel. Upstream, iron ore and coal are both passively generated by mining, so the real constraint is smelting and furnace throughput. The optimal input ratio is 5 Iron Plate to 1 Coal per Steel. In practice the Steel Furnace is almost always the bottleneck: its 7.5-second crafting time is far longer than the Iron Smelter's 3.2 seconds, so you will typically need roughly 2.1 iron smelters per steel furnace to keep them fed without buffering. Downstream, steel feeds into Advanced Circuits (1 steel + 1 copper cable + 1 plastic bar), Steel Wheels (1 steel + 1 iron plate), Electric Furnaces (1 steel + 1 circuit + 1 iron plate), Rocket Parts (1 steel + 1 plastic bar + 1 circuit), and nuclear-era items like Heat Exchangers, Pumps, and Steam Turbines. As your factory scales the demand multiplies: a single nuclear reactor build can consume hundreds of ingots, and the final rocket launch requires thousands. Scaling tip: pair each Steel Furnace with a dedicated coal-inserter line and a shared iron-plate buffer. Once you unlock the Electric Furnace, use it to smelt iron plates three times faster, easing upstream pressure. In endgame, split steel production across multiple factory zones to avoid a single point of failure.
