In the world the player arrives on, the Assembling Machine 3 does not appear in any pre-existing structure. Every AM3 on the alien landscape is the product of the player's own factory, assembled from steel plates, electronic circuits, copper wire, and iron plates in a recipe that itself demands a functioning AM2 line. This self-referential bootstrapping is a quiet signature of the game's design: the machine that builds the advanced components is itself built by a slightly less advanced machine, and that one by the most basic of all. The AM3 is, in a sense, the factory eating its own tail one tier higher. Visually, the AM3 is unmistakable. It dwarfs its predecessors, occupying a full 2×2 footprint and presenting a bulkier, more layered housing with additional piping and a wider crafting chamber. It has five input slots and one output slot, identical in configuration to AM1 and AM2, but the speed increase means it can sustain higher belt throughput without falling behind. It occupies a 2×2 tile footprint, which is the key layout difference from its 1×1 predecessors. This means a bank of AM3s takes up four times the floor space of an equivalent number of AM2s, so early planning of your factory floor matters. You cannot simply swap AM2s for AM3s in the same footprint; you need to redesign the belt and inserter layout around the larger footprint. The AM3 draws 0.6 MW of power, the same as its lower-tier siblings, so upgrading does not increase your electrical load per unit. It is unlocked by the "Assembly Machine 3" technology in the Production tab, which requires Advanced Circuit as a prerequisite, placing it firmly in late-game progression. For optimal pairing, use express inserters on both input and output to keep up with the 1.0/s rate. A common layout is a 2×2 AM3 with two express inserters feeding the five input slots (one inserter can service multiple slots if they share the same item) and one express inserter on the output. Adjacent AM3s can share a common input belt to reduce belt length. There are no adjacency speed bonuses or stacking effects; each AM3 operates independently. In a production line, the AM3 is typically the final crafting stage before items enter storage or the next processing tier.
