Large Biter Nest
The silent cradle from which the drone swarm is endlessly born.
The Large Biter Nest is a massive, dark organic structure that anchors the deepest reaches of Biter territory in the Factorio world. Unlike the smaller Biter Nests that churn out the familiar melee Biters, the Large Biter Nest is the breeding ground for Biter Spawners—the towering, spindly structures that generate the dreaded Biter Drones. It represents the apex of the Biter reproductive chain and a critical escalation point in any factory's war against the swarm. Visually, it dwarfs its smaller counterparts: a hulking mound of chitinous, almost fungal material, studded with pale veins and pulsing growths. It does not move, does not attack on its own, and does not shoot. Its threat is entirely indirect and relentless—each cycle it births another Spawner, and each Spawner births another wave of Drones that will rain fire on your production lines. For the player, it is the silent engine behind the most dangerous aerial assault in the game.

Lore & Background
In the ecology of the Biter territories, the Large Biter Nest occupies a role analogous to a queen's chamber in an insect colony. It is the fixed, immovable heart of a local Biter population. Where small nests dot the edges of dark zones and send out patrols of snarling Biters, the Large Nests sit deeper, in the densest pockets of territory, and their output is qualitatively different. They do not produce the ground-pounders. They produce the Spawners—those unsettling, multi-limbed structures that hover just above the ground and vomit Biter Drones into the sky in continuous, rhythmic bursts. Fans of the game often describe the first encounter with a Large Biter Nest as a turning point in the war. Up to that moment, the player's defenses are oriented around ground combat: walls, turrets, and the occasional flamethrower to clear a path. The moment a Spawner appears on the radar, the entire defensive calculus shifts. Drones fly over walls. They ignore the carefully constructed perimeter. They target the most valuable production nodes with surgical precision. The Large Nest, by ensuring a constant supply of Spawners, makes the aerial threat not a one-time raid but a permanent, compounding pressure. There is a strange, almost architectural beauty to the nest itself. In the top-down view, it reads as a dark, irregular rosette of layered organic plates, with lighter, almost bioluminescent veins threading through the chitin. It does not glow, does not animate in any dramatic way. It simply sits, patient and vast, while the world around it fills with the whining, darting shapes of Drones. In the fan community, it has become a symbol of the Biter war's true nature: not a single battle to be won, but an ongoing siege in which the enemy's infrastructure must be dismantled piece by piece, nest by nest, before the swarm can be broken.
In Their Own Story
The survey drone's feed flickered as it crested the ridge and descended into the black. The Biter territory here was thick—small nests clustered like dark mushrooms among the rocks, Biters skittering between them in loose, purposeless groups. But the drone's operators were not here for the small things. They followed the signal deeper, past the outer ring of patrols, into a hollow where the ground itself seemed to breathe. There it was. The Large Nest. It filled the frame, a cathedral of dark chitin and pale, pulsing veins, easily three times the size of any small nest they had catalogued. Around its base, two Biter Spawners already stood, their limbs twitching, their maws open in that endless, silent scream. A third was half-emerged, still glistening, still warm. "Marking the position," the operator said, voice flat. "Log it as a priority target. If we don't take this out before the next expansion wave, the Drone count in this sector is going to double by nightfall."
The drone pulled back. Behind it, the first Biter Drone lifted off the Spawner's mouth and banked east, toward the distant, glowing smudge of the factory. The war was not a battle. It was a tide. And this was where the tide was born.
Reader's Guide
The Large Biter Nest does not announce itself with a roar. It announces itself with silence, and then with the first Biter Drone that clips the corner of your iron furnace and vanishes into the smoke. You will know you have entered this chapter of the war the moment your radar begins showing Spawner icons in the Biter territory beyond your perimeter. The escalation is not a single event but a slow, compounding pressure: each Spawner that matures adds another continuous stream of Drones to the sky, and each Drone targets your most expensive, most concentrated production nodes. Defensively, the rules change. Walls that held Biters for months are irrelevant against Drones. You need layered turret coverage—gun turrets for volume, laser turrets for the larger, tougher Drones that appear in greater numbers as the nest's output scales. Placement matters: turrets must be positioned to cover the open sky above your production lines, not just the ground approach. Flamethrowers, which are your best friend against ground swarms, are largely useless here. Logistically, the war demands that you stop treating Biter territory as a buffer zone and start treating it as a front line. Destroying the Large Nest itself is the only way to stop the Spawner pipeline. That means sending a dedicated assault team—armored, fast, well-supplied—deep into the territory, through waves of Biters, to reduce the nest to rubble. Until you do, every expansion you build, every new production line you add, is a new target for the next wave. The strategic stakes are simple and brutal: the nest out-produces your defenses, or you out-produce the nest. There is no third option.
Did You Know?
- The Large Biter Nest is the only structure in the Biter ecosystem that produces Biter Spawners, making it the root of the entire Biter Drone threat chain.
- Unlike Biters and Biter Drones, the Large Biter Nest is completely passive—it will not chase, attack, or move toward the player's factory on its own.
- Destroying a Large Biter Nest does not immediately eliminate existing Biter Spawners or Drones already in the field; it only stops the generation of new Spawners.
- In the Biter territory layout, Large Biter Nests tend to appear in the densest, most central regions of dark zones, often surrounded by clusters of smaller Biter Nests and active Biter patrols.
