The chain is deceptively simple: Iron Ore → [Furnace + Fuel] → Iron Plate. One ore yields one plate. The furnace can be a Stone Furnace (fuel-powered, 25 % speed), a Steel Furnace (fuel-powered, 50 % speed), or an Electric Furnace (electricity-powered, 50 % speed). Fuel options include wood, coal, and petroleum coke; the electric variant removes fuel logistics entirely. Downstream, iron plates feed an Assembling Machine to produce Iron Gears (2 plates → 1 gear) and Iron Rods (1 plate → 1 rod). They also go directly into building recipes: Iron Stove, Iron Chest, Iron Wall, Iron Fence, and Circuits (1 plate + 1 copper cable). Upstream, the only dependency is the ore itself and a steady fuel or power supply. The bottleneck in the early game is almost always the furnace count and fuel delivery — a single stone furnace at 0.25 plates/s is painfully slow. Mid-game, the bottleneck shifts to the assembling machines consuming plates for gears and rods, since those recipes demand 2× and 1× plates respectively. Late-game, the chain scales linearly: more furnaces, more miners, more fuel or power. The optimal ratio is 1:1 ore-to-plate, but the real constraint is energy: budget fuel or electricity for every furnace in the field before you budget miners.
