Stone Wall
One stone, one tile, one stubborn line between order and the swarm.
The Stone Wall is one of the most humble yet essential structures in the Factorio universe. Crafted from a single unit of stone, it is a 1×1 tile defensive barrier that the player can place almost anywhere on the ground to form perimeter lines, channel biter attacks, or simply mark the edge of a growing factory. It requires no research, no power, and no moving parts—just a pickaxe, a quarry, and the will to keep the biters out. Despite its simplicity, the Stone Wall is the backbone of early-game base security. Before the player has access to turrets, gates, or even a proper wall of brick, it is the only line between a carefully laid conveyor belt and a swarm of snapping mandibles. It is the first thing most players learn to build in quantity, and the first thing they lose to a well-timed biter raid.

Lore & Background
In the scattered settlement logs that the player stumbles upon, the Stone Wall is never given a formal name. It is simply 'the wall' or 'the rocks we stacked.' The original inhabitants of this world—those who left behind the blueprints, the research notes, and the half-finished assembly lines—clearly understood that a factory left open to the wilderness is a factory that will be consumed. The biters, with their relentless hunger and their ability to gnaw through almost anything organic or mechanical, made perimeter defense a non-negotiable priority. The Stone Wall is the cheapest expression of that priority. No energy is needed to raise it. No complex fabrication is required. A single stone, placed on the ground, becomes a tooth in the jaw of the base. The settlement's engineers, in their terse notes, refer to rows of these walls as 'the first ring'—the outermost boundary that no biter should cross. It is a philosophy as much as a building: you do not need to be powerful to be protected, you only need to be deliberate. As the player's factory grows into sprawling corridors of furnaces, assemblers, and chemical plants, the Stone Wall quietly recedes to the periphery. But it never truly disappears. In the most desperate raids, when a biter nest has been accidentally provoked and the swarm pours out in a chittering tide, it is still the old stone walls that buy the crucial seconds for the player to reach a turret or a gun. The wall does not fight. It simply refuses to be moved.
In Their Own Story
The rain had stopped, but the mud still clung to the boots. Kael knelt in the dirt at the edge of the factory floor, pressing the next stone into the line. Behind her, the hum of the iron furnace was a low, constant thrum, almost like a heartbeat. Ahead, in the grey half-light, the biter nest sat low in the undergrowth, a tangle of chitin and patience. She had placed forty-three walls so far. The blueprint called for sixty. Each one was the same: a single stone, a soft *thunk* as it settled, a small square of defiance against the dark. The biters circled. They did not charge. Not yet. Kael placed the forty-fourth stone, stood, and checked her rifle. The wall held. For now, that was enough.
Reader's Guide
The Stone Wall is a 1×1 defensive structure with no input or output slots, no power draw, and no crafting speed—it is simply placed. Because it requires no technology to unlock, it is available from the very first moments of the game, making it the default perimeter tool before the player researches more advanced defenses. Placement is the key skill. Walls block biter pathing, so a continuous line of Stone Walls will funnel enemies into a kill-zone where turrets or the player's rifle can concentrate fire. Gaps of even one tile will be exploited, so inspect your perimeter carefully. Walls can be stacked in any configuration—straight lines, L-shapes, boxes around a single assembler—and they do not interfere with conveyor belts, pipes, or power poles placed on adjacent tiles, making them ideal for tight factory layouts where space is scarce. Pair Stone Walls with Electric Turrets (unlocked later) for a layered defense: the walls absorb the initial biter rush while turrets pick off survivors. They also work well in front of gates, where a biter swarm is forced to break through the wall before it can even reach the gate mechanism. Remember that walls are destructible; a sustained raid will eventually chew through them, so plan for replacement or upgrade to more durable structures as your base grows.
Did You Know?
- The Stone Wall is one of the very few buildings in Factorio that requires no research, no power, and no crafting station—it can be placed the moment the player has a single stone in hand.
- Biters of every tier, from the smallest spitter to the largest spitter, can damage and destroy Stone Walls, meaning even a seemingly impregnable stone perimeter is only a delay, not a guarantee.
- Because the Stone Wall occupies a full 1×1 tile, it can block the placement of other buildings on that tile, which means a misplaced wall in the middle of a factory floor can halt an entire production line until it is re
- In the game's internal item category, the Stone Wall is grouped under 'Walls,' which also includes the later Brick Wall and other structural barriers, distinguishing it from machines, transport, or military items.
