Core smelting chain: Iron Ore → Iron Plate, and Copper Ore → Copper Plate, both processed in the Electric Furnace. Upstream dependencies: Mining Drills (for ore), belts or inserters to feed the furnace hoppers, and a functioning electric grid. Downstream, iron plates feed Assembling Machines, Crafting Machines, Rail Components, and virtually every advanced recipe. Copper plates feed Electronic Circuits, Copper Wires, and Poles themselves—creating a small bootstrap loop in the early game. In practice, the bottleneck is almost always power distribution or belt logistics rather than the furnace itself. Scaling: As you add more furnaces, the power draw compounds linearly. A row of 10 furnaces needs 1 MW; a row of 50 needs 5 MW. Plan your generator capacity and pole routing before you lay the furnace row, or you will spend an hour debugging a grid that simply cannot deliver. The stone furnaces can be retired entirely once the electric grid is stable, but keeping a small backup cluster is a popular safety habit among experienced players.
