Military 6

Your turrets just found their second wind—faster, meaner, and very much not done shooting.

Military 6 is a mid-to-late-game technology in Factorio's military research tree. It does not introduce any new items or entities; rather, it is a pure performance upgrade that increases the firing speed of both gun turrets and laser turrets by 20%. In the context of the player's ever-expanding fortress against the biter hordes, Military 6 represents the moment when your defensive grid starts to feel genuinely lethal rather than merely reactive. Sitting between Military 5 and Military 7 in a strictly linear chain, it is one of the most 'satisfying' upgrades in the military track: no new blueprints to learn, no new items to manage—just your existing turrets punching harder and faster, turning a previously tense biter siege into a one-sided demolition.

Lore & Background

In the Factorio world, the player's industrial complex is never truly safe. Biters pour from the edges of the map in endless, escalating waves, and the only thing standing between a tidy conveyor network and a pile of chewed-up iron plates is the turret line. The military technology tree reflects a very human progression: first you learn to point a gun at something, then you learn to point it faster, then you learn to point it even faster, and by Military 6 the whole perimeter is a wall of ticking, hammering, laser-humming violence. What makes Military 6 feel distinct from its neighbors is the psychological shift it produces. Earlier military tiers introduce new turret types or modest speed bumps. By the time you research Military 6, your base already has dozens—perhaps hundreds—of turrets. A 20% speed increase across all of them is not a single turret firing a little quicker; it is the entire defensive perimeter snapping into a new rhythm. The clatter of gun turrets becomes a near-continuous roar. Laser turrets, which already had a satisfying 'pew-pew-pew' cadence, now sound like a metronome set to a tempo that makes biters simply never survive the approach. The technology itself is presented with the same clean, utilitarian iconography as the rest of the military track: a small turret silhouette with a speed indicator. There is no fanfare, no lore text beyond the stat description. In the Factorio world, that is the point. The player is not a hero giving a speech before the battle; the player is an engineer who just flipped a switch in the research lab and walked back to the base to watch the turrets do their job.

In Their Own Story

The biter wave hit at what the player's internal clock read as 14:00, though 'time' was a loose concept when you'd been running this base for three weeks straight. The first cluster of small biters crested the ridge to the north, and the outer ring of gun turrets—twelve of them, arranged in a lazy arc around the iron plate smelter—began to spin. Before Military 6, those twelve turrets had a noticeable gap between shots. You could almost count them: *clack… clack… clack…* Each biters that slipped through the gaps was a small, grinding loss of resources. Now the rhythm was tighter, almost aggressive. *Clack-clack-clack-clack.* The small biters didn't just die; they were shredded before they reached the second ring. The laser turrets on the inner arc painted the air with thin red lines, and the cadence of their hum had shifted up a semitone, a sound the player had come to associate with the specific, quiet thrill of a well-run defense. The player leaned back in the chair, watched the biter count tick down, and thought: *I should probably research Military 7 now.* But not yet. Not yet. There was a particular, almost meditative satisfaction in listening to the turrets find their new tempo, and the player wanted to savor it for at least one more wave.

Reader's Guide

Military 6 is a pure stat-boost technology in the military track. It grants a 20% increase to the firing speed of both gun turrets and laser turrets. It does not unlock any new items, entities, or recipes—your existing turret fleet simply performs better. Prerequisite chain: Military 1 → Military 2 → Military 3 → Military 4 → Military 5 → **Military 6** → Military 7 → Military 8. You must have Military 5 researched before the Military 6 icon becomes available in the technology menu. There are no branching paths; the military tree is strictly linear. Research cost is modest by Factorio standards, making it one of the 'cheap wins' in the late-game tech list. It slots naturally after you have already deployed a meaningful number of turrets (typically after Military 3 or 4, when you have your first turret ring) and before you are investing in the higher-tier turret speed and damage improvements of Military 7 and 8. In terms of progression, Military 6 sits in the mid-to-late game. You will likely have it researched while you are still building toward advanced production (plastic, chemical plants) or just after you have finished your first full biter-defense perimeter. Because it is a percentage-based upgrade, its value scales with turret count: the more turrets you have, the more tangible the 20% speed bump feels. For blueprint-based play, Military 6 does not appear in any blueprint. It is a research-only entry. However, the turrets it accelerates are, of course, part of the items you place via blueprints, so the tech tree and the blueprint system interact here: you can blueprint a turret ring before researching Military 6, and the turrets will simply operate at their base speed until the research completes.
