The Advanced Lab is the second tier of research buildings in Factorio, representing the moment a fledgling automation project stops being a handful of furnaces and becomes a genuine industrial complex. It replaces the humble basic Lab by demanding a higher rate of basic science packs and introducing plastic bars into the recipe, forcing the player to crack open the petroleum pipeline for the first time. In practice, it marks the transition from 'I can make circuits' to 'I can refine oil and feed a growing research tree.'

Visually, the Advanced Lab is a slightly larger, more angular structure with a reinforced frame and a glowing science-pack indicator on top. It sits among conveyor belts, oil pipelines, and assembling machines, and its presence on the map is the telltale sign that the factory has outgrown its early, hand-fed infancy and is now scaling toward the advanced and military science tiers.

The Advanced Lab recipe requires 30 iron plates, 10 copper plates, 10 plastic bars, 10 circuits, and 1 basic Lab, all assembled in an Assembling Machine 1 or higher. Upstream dependencies: Iron plates come from iron ore via a furnace. Copper plates come from copper ore via a furnace. Circuits require 1 iron plate + 1 copper plate in an assembling machine. Plastic bars require 1 light oil + 1 heavy oil, both products of the oil refinery fed by crude oil from a pumpjack. The basic Lab itself needs 20 iron plates, 10 copper plates, and 10 circuits. The typical bottleneck at this stage is the plastic bar line. Oil refining is slow, and the refinery's output of light and heavy oil must be balanced so neither product backs up. A common early mistake is building only one refinery and then discovering that the plastic bar assembler is starved half the time. Scaling to two or three refineries, with a buffer of storage tanks between the pumpjack and the refinery, smooths this out. Circuits are the second pressure point. Because both the Lab and the Advanced Lab consume circuits, and the Advanced Lab also consumes the Lab (which itself consumed circuits), the effective circuit demand is roughly 20 per Advanced Lab. Ensure your circuit assembler has a dedicated, uninterrupted supply of iron and copper plates. As the factory grows toward the advanced science tier, the Advanced Lab is typically replaced by the Production Lab. At that point, the iron, copper, and plastic infrastructure you built for the Advanced Lab becomes the backbone of the entire mid-game factory, and the oil pipeline you laid for plastic bars now also feeds chemical science and later, space-age research.
