A Smelter processes 1 ore per second. Therefore, the optimal ratio is **2 smelters per mining drill**. In early game, players often under-smelt, causing ore to back up on the input belt. Adding a second smelter per drill eliminates this bottleneck immediately. **The smelter itself:** Input is 1 iron ore or 1 copper ore. Output is 1 iron plate or 1 copper plate. No byproducts, no fluid requirements, no efficiency modules (the conversion is fixed 1:1). Speed modules can be inserted to increase throughput, but in practice most players simply add more smelters or upgrade to a faster machine. **Upgrade path:** Fast Smelter (2× speed), Electric Furnace (3× speed), Advanced Furnace (4× speed).
