Bomber

Slow, heavy, and raining fire from above—the sky is no longer safe.

The Bomber is a flying member of Factorio's hostile biter ecosystem, recognizable by its broad, bat-like wings and the heavy explosive payload it carries aloft. Unlike the ground-crawling small, medium, and large biters that players encounter from the very first minutes of a game, the Bomber represents a genuine escalation in threat: it ignores the walls and floors that keep ground enemies at bay and instead hovers above the factory, dropping bombs that crater through machinery and storage in a radius of destruction. Bombers typically appear once the player's pollution has pushed the local evolution stage into its moderate range, signaling that the surrounding enemy biome is maturing and diversifying. They fly in loose, wavering groups, making them a persistent aerial nuisance for mid-to-late-game players who have not yet layered their defenses with sufficient anti-air firepower.

Lore & Background

In the ecological logic of the biter world, the Bomber occupies a niche that ground-dwelling biters simply cannot fill. Where small and medium biters swarm in dense, chittering packs along the forest floor, and large biters lumber forward as living siege engines, the Bomber takes to the air. Its broad, membranous wings and bulky thorax are built for short, deliberate flights rather than speed. It rises above the canopy, circles the glowing, humming machinery of the player's factory, and releases its payload: a dense, spherical bomb that arcs down and detonates in a wide blast, shattering belts, crushing furnaces, and sending sparks cascading across the ground. Fans of the game's worldbuilding often note that the Bomber's design feels less like an insect and more like a crude, biological drone—something that evolved not for hunting other creatures but for targeting the unnatural, heat-generating structures that the player erects. Its slow, almost ponderous flight path suggests a creature that is not agile or quick, but whose sheer destructive payload more than compensates. In the broader biter hierarchy, it sits alongside spitters and gun turrets as one of the 'specialist' enemies that appear as the biome's evolution deepens, each filling a distinct tactical role that forces the player to diversify their defenses. The Bomber's presence in a biome is a visible warning sign: the red forest is no longer content with sending ground swarms. The air itself has become a vector of attack, and the player must look up as often as they look down.

In Their Own Story

The night shift at the outer furnace array was quiet—too quiet. Kael wiped grease from his gloves and watched the red canopy sway in a wind that smelled of sulfur. Then the shadow passed overhead, wide and slow, blotting out the sodium glow of the work-lights. A second shadow. A third. They hung in the air like dark kites, wings beating in a lazy, metronomic rhythm. One of them tilted, and something fell. It hit the ground between the two stone furnaces with a thud that felt more like a heartbeat than an explosion, and then the world turned white. The heat rolled across Kael's face. He rolled behind the belt conveyor, ears ringing, and watched the crater where his ore feeder had been. Above, the Bombers circled again, unhurried, indifferent, already picking their next target. He reached for the gun turret's manual override and prayed the laser had enough charge.

Reader's Guide

Bombers are large, slow-flying creatures with broad, bat-like wings and a bulky, dark body. They hover at a low-to-moderate altitude above the player's base, circling in loose groups of three to six before releasing a heavy bomb that arcs downward and detonates in a wide area, destroying machines, belts, and storage within the blast radius. Their flight is deliberately slow, making them highly vulnerable to sustained turret fire. They spawn in the red (enemy) biome once the local evolution stage reaches a moderate threshold, typically alongside or just after spitters become common. They do not appear in the very earliest stages of a game. Their presence signals that the biome is diversifying beyond simple ground swarms. Effective countermeasures include laser turrets (their slow speed makes them an easy sustained target), flak cannons for area denial, and armored walls to limit the blast radius of any bomb that gets through. Player-held weapons—especially the rifle and shotgun—are also effective for picking them off individually. Because they fly above ground level, standard armored walls do not block them, but they cannot pass through the roof of a fully enclosed structure. In the broader biter ecosystem, the Bomber fills the aerial-strike role. While ground biters handle direct contact damage and spitters/gun turrets handle ranged projectiles, the Bomber introduces area-of-effect destruction from above, forcing the player to think in three dimensions when designing defensive perimeters.
