Furnace 6

A furnace that exists only in the space between memory and misremembering.

There is no item, technology, or blueprint called "Furnace 6" in Factorio's canon. The game's smelting progression consists of exactly three furnace tiers—Stone Furnace, Steel Furnace, and Electric Furnace—each unlocked through its own research. This entry exists to clarify a common misremembering or confusion and to anchor readers to the furnace line that actually exists in the game. If you encountered "Furnace 6" in a mod, a fan-fiction, or a community meme, it is not part of Wube Software's base game or any confirmed official expansion. The sections below therefore cover the real furnace progression for reference.

Lore & Background

In the dusty workshops of the outer asteroid where the player first sets up a smelting line, the Stone Furnace is humble—a squat block of grey rock belching orange sparks. It turns iron ore into iron plates, copper into copper plates, and slowly, stubbornly, builds the foundation of an industrial empire. There is no sixth iteration. There is no hidden sixth furnace waiting behind a locked research node. The progression is deliberately linear and finite: stone, then steel, then electricity. The Electric Furnace, the true apex of smelting in the base game, hums with a different energy. It no longer consumes fuel; it draws power from the grid, and its throughput dwarfs its predecessors. For many players, the moment they finally place a row of Electric Furnaces and watch the plates pour out like a river of metal is the moment the game stops feeling like a survival project and starts feeling like an industry. The idea of a "Furnace 6" likely persists as a folk artifact of the community—perhaps a conflation with the six-digit throughput numbers, a misread of a mod name, or simply the brain's habit of assuming any numbered sequence must continue past its actual endpoint. In the canon, the furnace line ends where the player's ambitions begin.

In Their Own Story

The player squints at the research panel, scrolling past Advanced Circuits, past Logistics Robots, past the long grey list of unaffordable technologies. There, between "Fluid Handling" and "Fusion Energy," they swear they see it: a small icon, a blocky furnace shape, the label reading "Furnace 6." They click it. The description reads: "Smelts. Faster. You're welcome." They laugh, shake their head, and keep scrolling. It's not there. It was never there. The cursor hovers over Electric Furnace, the real one, the one that will actually keep the factory fed, and they click Research. The little progress bar starts its slow crawl. Outside the window, the alien sky is the colour of a bruise, and the first Stone Furnace they ever built is long since buried under a mountain of steel pipes and conveyor belts. But it was there. It was enough. It was the first one.

Reader's Guide

Since "Furnace 6" does not exist, this guide covers the actual furnace research chain in Factorio. Stone Furnace is available from the start (no research needed) and is unlocked by the base "Smelting" technology, which costs 5 science packs and requires nothing prior. It smelts one ore into one plate per cycle, consuming solid fuel (coal, wood, peat, etc.). Steel Furnace is unlocked by the "Advanced Smelting
