Shooter

One mouth, one round, one very expensive hole in your wall.

The Shooter is a mid-tier ranged biter that haunts the outer and middle rings of biter nests across Factorio's alien world. Unlike the brute-force melee biters that swarm in packs, the Shooter stands apart, raising its bulbous, cannon-like maw to fire a single heavy projectile at any machine or structure it can target. It represents the first truly ranged threat a player encounters beyond the Spitter, forcing a shift from simple wall-building to genuine defensive engineering. In the broader biter ecosystem, the Shooter occupies a crucial niche: it is the nest's designated 'artillery,' picking off isolated structures and punishing players who park too close to nest perimeters. Its presence signals that the surrounding biome has evolved past the early-game stage, and that the nest is growing in both size and tactical sophistication.

Lore & Background

The biters of Factorio's world are not a single species but a sprawling, semi-organized colony that builds its nests in concentric rings of organic architecture. The Shooter evolved—whether through natural selection or some alien directive—into the nest's dedicated ranged striker. Where the Small, Medium, and Large biters form the melee infantry that swarms in waves, the Shooter is the specialist that holds position and picks targets. Its oversized maw, which resembles a crude biological cannon, can channel a dense kinetic round that punches through a single layer of wall or a vulnerable machine in one hit. Nest behaviorists among the player community have noted that Shooters tend to cluster near the nest's outer defensive ring, often flanking Spitters. They do not swarm; they wait. A player who approaches a nest and begins mining or building will find the Shooter locking on, its maw tilting to track the target before a brief charging animation precedes the shot. This deliberate, telegraphed attack makes it feel almost intelligent in its pacing, a stark contrast to the mindless rush of melee biters. As the nest evolves further, Shooters are eventually supplemented and then superseded by Gunners and the terrifying Destroyer, but for a long stretch of mid-game they remain the nest's most reliable ranged threat. Players who learn to respect the Shooter's range and projectile speed find that a well-placed turret or a disciplined wall-and-turret layout makes the nest far less punishing.

In Their Own Story

The mining rig sat three tiles from the nest's outer wall, its drill chewing into a rich iron patch. Kael had been careful—turrets on every corner, a double wall of stone, the whole thing tucked behind a bend in the terrain. For two hours it held. Then the green shape crested the ridge. Not a swarm. One. Its maw was enormous, almost comical, a swollen sphere of chitin and muscle that had nothing to do with chewing. It tilted. The maw's aperture widened, and a faint, wet clicking sound carried on the wind. Kael's hand was already on the pause key. The turret on the north corner fired first—a tight burst of sparks that the Shooter simply ignored, its body too thick, too armored for small-caliber rounds. The maw pulsed once, twice. A round the size of a fist left the aperture with a sound like a gunpowder crack, and the eastern wall simply ceased to exist. A clean, round hole. The iron patch gleamed through the gap like an invitation. Kael unpaused. The turret on the south corner swung, and this time the round connected. The Shooter staggered, its maw splitting open in a spray of dark fluid. It did not die. It turned, slowly, and began to walk back toward the nest's green-glowing depths, dragging one leg. The iron patch was still there. The wall was not. Kael sighed, opened the inventory, and began laying new stone.

Reader's Guide

Appearance: The Shooter resembles a stocky, quadrupedal biter with a disproportionately large, spherical maw that dominates its head. Its body is a mottled dark green with lighter chitinous plating along the back. The maw is the defining feature—a rounded, cannon-like structure with a visible aperture that glows faintly when the Shooter is charging a shot. Attack pattern: The Shooter does not charge or swarm. It holds position, typically 4–8 tiles from the nearest player structure, tracks its target with a visible aiming animation, and fires a single heavy projectile. There is a short wind-up (the maw widens and the body rocks back) before the round launches. The projectile travels in a straight line and deals significant impact damage to the first structure or player it strikes. The Shooter then pauses briefly before re-targeting. Spawn conditions: Shooters appear in biter nests once the surrounding biome reaches a moderate evolution stage. They populate the outer and middle rings of the nest, often in small groups of two to four, interspersed with Spitters and melee biters. They do not spawn in the innermost ring, which is reserved for higher-tier enemies. Interaction with infrastructure: The Shooter is particularly dangerous to isolated machines—single drills, pumps, or conveyor belts that lack wall protection. One well-placed shot can destroy a single-layer wall and the machine behind it in the same hit. It does not pathfind around walls the way melee biters do; it simply shoots through them. This makes it a constant pressure on any base built adjacent to a nest. Countermeasures: Turrets are the primary counter. A single gun turret with adequate range can eliminate a Shooter in two or three hits, though its armor means it will land one or two shots before dying. Walls reduce the damage per hit but do not stop the projectile entirely, so layered walls (two or three tiles thick) are recommended. Keeping a minimum distance of ten tiles from the nest's outer ring eliminates the Shooter's effective range. In clusters, prioritizing Shooters before melee biters swarm is critical, as their ranged damage can break through defensive lines and let the melee wave through. Role in the ecosystem: The Shooter is the nest's mid-tier ranged specialist. It fills the gap between the Spitter (weaker, faster projectile) and the Gunner (multiple projectiles, higher tier). In a fully evolved nest, Shooters form the backbone of the nest's ranged defense, providing sustained fire while melee biters handle close-range threats.
