The chain has three production stages. Stage 1: Copper Ore → Copper Plate in a Furnace (1 ore → 1 plate). Iron Ore → Iron Plate in a Furnace (1 ore → 1 plate). Stage 2: 5 Iron Plates + 5 Copper Plates → 1 Iron Gear Wheel in an Assembler. Stage 3: 1 Copper Plate + 1 Iron Gear Wheel → 1 Electronic Circuit in an Assembler. The total ore requirement per circuit is 6 Copper Plates and 5 Iron Plates. The optimal production ratio is therefore 6:5 copper-to-iron at the furnace level. In practice, the Iron Gear Wheel assembler is the bottleneck because it consumes 10 plates per output while the circuit assembler consumes only 2, meaning you need roughly twice as many furnaces feeding the gear stage as the circuit stage. A common early layout runs 2 furnaces per gear assembler and 1 furnace per circuit assembler. Scaling: at 1 circuit/second you need 6 copper plates/s and 5 iron plates/s. At 10 circuits/s that becomes 60 and 50 plates/s, quickly outstripping a single mine. Players typically add parallel mine lines, upgrade to faster assemblers, and introduce logistic networks. The chain itself does not change, but the infrastructure around it grows exponentially, making it the perfect template for learning factory design.
