Chemistry 12

The last flask you shake before the sky catches fire.

Chemistry 12 is the final rung in Factorio's Chemistry technology line, the long chain of research that takes a player from a single humble chemistry plant to the full industrial alchemy required for endgame production. By the time a factory has ground through eleven prior chemistry tiers—unlocking oil refineries, plastic, sulfuric acid, steel, engines, rocket fuel, and rocket parts—Chemistry 12 represents the last chemical process the base game demands, gating the final production recipes that feed the rocket-launch sequence. It sits at the very top of the chemistry progression, meaning a player who reaches it has already built a sprawling, multi-line factory with dozens of connected production chains. In the community, completing Chemistry 12 is often treated as a milestone in its own right: the moment the 'real' endgame—rocket assembly and the launch countdown—becomes genuinely within reach.

Lore & Background

In the Factorio world, the player arrives on an alien planet already littered with the bones of a previous civilization—half-buried conveyor belts, rusted furnaces, and the skeletal frame of a rocket that never left the pad. The Chemistry tech line mirrors the process of reverse-engineering that lost industrial knowledge, tier by tier, until the final recipe is decoded and the rocket can finally be built. Chemistry 12, as the capstone, represents the last piece of that puzzle. The earlier tiers taught the player how to crack oil, polymerize plastic, and forge steel; the middle tiers introduced engines and fuel; and the final tier completes the chemical vocabulary needed to produce the rocket part in the quantities the launch demands. It is, in narrative terms, the moment the player's factory stops being a collection of separate production lines and becomes a single, integrated machine with one purpose. The game never spells out the story of who built the original rocket, but the implication is clear: someone else tried this before, got through eleven chemistry tiers, and then something went wrong. The player's Chemistry 12 research is, quietly, an act of finishing someone else's work.

In Their Own Story

The lab hummed. Outside, the factory stretched to every horizon the player could see—kilometres of conveyor belts carrying steel, plastic, and sulfuric acid in endless rivers. The research screen glowed with a single remaining slot: Chemistry 12. The progress bar had been crawling for three in-game days. The player leaned back in the chair, watching a train of iron ore clatter past the window. Somewhere out in the mid-game sprawl, a new oil refinery was already being laid down by the construction robots, its yellow tanks rising from the dirt like mechanical dandelions. The factory was alive, breathing, growing. It had been a single furnace and a mining drill. Now it was a city. The bar ticked past ninety percent. Then ninety-five. The player's hands were shaking, though they couldn't say why. When the final percentage rolled over and the new recipe bloomed in the production menu, there was no fanfare, no cinematic. Just the soft chime of a completed research, and the quiet, enormous weight of knowing that the rocket was no longer a dream drawn in the tutorial. It was a to-do list. And the factory, humming and clanking in the alien dusk, was already starting to build it.

Reader's Guide

Chemistry 12 is the terminal technology in the Chemistry line. It requires Chemistry 11 as its direct prerequisite, which in turn requires Chemistry 10, and so on back through the full twelve-step chain that begins with the Chemistry Plant. In practice, by the time you are researching Chemistry 12 you will have already unlocked the oil refinery, plastic bar, sulfuric acid, steel plate, engine, rocket fuel, and rocket part—meaning your factory is deep into late-game production. The research cost for Chemistry 12 is high, demanding multiple science-pack types simultaneously (typically production, military, chemical, and rocket science packs in substantial quantities). This means you need functioning labs fed by at least four distinct production lines before the research even begins. Budget several in-game days of lab throughput. Once completed, Chemistry 12 unlocks the final chemical recipe(s) needed to produce the rocket part at the scale the launch requires. With it, the only remaining task is assembling and launching the rocket itself. Blueprints: Factorio's blueprint system lets you save any selection of tiles, insert them elsewhere, or share them via a short code. For a Chemistry 12–era factory, players commonly blueprint the entire rocket-fuel and rocket-part production cluster so it can be dropped into a second save or shared on the community. Blueprints interact with the tech tree in one important way: you can only insert a blueprint that uses items you have already researched, so sharing a late-game chemistry layout with a player who has only reached Chemistry 5 will fail. The community has produced many elegant, compact rocket-part factory designs that fit the Chemistry 12 requirement into surprisingly small footprints.
