It occupies a 1×1 tile and presents pipe connection points on all four faces, but only the input and output faces are functionally connected—fluid cannot pass through the other two sides. Direction is set at placement and cannot be rotated in-game, so plan your pipe routing accordingly. The Pump technology, found in the Fluid Handling research tree, is the gate that unlocks this machine. Before researching it, fluids can only flow passively from a source outward, which severely limits refinery design. Once available, pumps let you create bidirectional loops, connect isolated pipe networks, and feed machines that sit upstream of their fluid source. A practical quirk: because the pump is directional, placing two pumps back-to-back (output-to-output) creates a dead end. For bidirectional flow between two networks, you need two pumps facing opposite directions with a short pipe segment between them.
