Sword
Six iron ore, one smelter, and a very angry biter nest—your first real answer to the swarm.
The Sword is the most basic melee weapon in Factorio, crafted from a single Iron Plate and a single Steel Plate at any crafting station. It occupies a unique niche in the player's arsenal: it is the only weapon that requires no copper, no circuits, and no electronics, making it the sole offensive tool available in the earliest minutes of a run, before the factory has even produced its first cable. While it is quickly outclassed by the Gun and later firearms, the Sword remains a practical, ammo-free sidearm for clearing small biter nests, defending a lone smelter, or simply feeling the satisfying *clang* of steel on chitin when you are too far from your production line to risk a ranged engagement.

Lore & Background
In the desolate, rust-strewn world the player wakes to, the Sword is less a weapon and more a declaration. You have no gun, no bullets, no backup. You have a handful of iron plates cooling on a smelter and a craftable blade that says, in the most pragmatic way possible: *I will not be eaten today.* The biters do not care about your production quotas. They care about the warm, slow-moving shape that keeps appearing near their tunnels. The Sword is the first time the player stops being prey. Fans often romanticize the Sword as a throwaway item, but in the narrative logic of the abandoned station it carries weight. The original crew left behind blueprints, smelters, and a very specific set of early-game recipes. The Sword sits at the very bottom of the weapons tree, a tool that requires nothing but iron and the will to swing it. It is the weapon of a person who has just realized the world is hostile and has not yet built the infrastructure to fight it properly. There is a quiet satisfaction in the community around the Sword that goes beyond its stats. It is the weapon you craft at 3 a.m. on a fresh save, alone in a dark map, watching biter eyes glow in the periphery. You swing. They die. You do not need a gun yet. You just need to not die tonight, and the Sword is enough.
In Their Own Story
The smelter hissed and spat a single steel plate onto the conveyor, and you caught it before it rolled off the edge. One iron plate in your hand. One steel plate in the other. The crafting table's little green light blinked, patient as a heartbeat. You placed them down. The Sword materialized with a soft *tink*, and the weight of it in your palm felt almost absurd—this was supposed to be enough? The biter nest was forty tiles east, a dark mound of chitin and clicking mandibles. You could hear them from here, a wet, rhythmic scraping, like something gnawing through the bedrock. Your gun blueprint was still three circuits away. Three circuits. A lifetime. You walked east. The Sword felt cold and honest in your grip. The first biter lunged, and you met it with a flat, ringing blow that sent it skidding across the dirt. The second. The third. Each swing cost you nothing but breath and a little stamina, and each one answered the clicking with a clean, final *crack*. By the time the nest was still, your arms ached and the Sword was nicked along the edge. You sheathed it, watched the smelter glow orange in the dusk, and thought: *tomorrow I build the gun. Tonight, this was enough.*
Reader's Guide
The Sword is a single-craft item, not a continuous production line, so there is no conveyor network or buffer system to design. The recipe is 1 Iron Plate + 1 Steel Plate, crafted at a Crafting Table (or any crafting station, including a production robot's output if you are being absurd). Upstream chain: Iron Ore → (Smelter) → Iron Plate. Five Iron Plates → (Smelter) → 1 Steel Plate. So one Sword consumes 6 Iron Ore in total. The smelter is the only machine in the chain, and it is the bottleneck: a single smelter produces one Iron Plate every 0.5 s, meaning you need 3 s of smelting for the iron plates and 2.5 s for the steel plate, roughly 5.5 s of smelter time per Sword if you are running one smelter serially. Because the Sword is a one-off craft, it does not scale with factory growth. You make one, you fight, you move on. The practical "optimal ratio" is simply: ensure your smelter has a steady supply of Iron Ore (a single mining drill or even manual mining covers it) and that you have at least one smelter running. The Steel Plate stage is the slowest link because it consumes five Iron Plates, so if you are crafting multiple Swords in a row, batch your Iron Plate production first. In a growing factory the Sword becomes irrelevant to logistics; it is a personal item, not a product. Its only real scaling concern is ensuring you do not accidentally consume your Iron Plates for the Sword when you need them for the Gun, the first circuit, or the first belt. Craft it early, use it early, and let the smelter get back to work.
Did You Know?
- The Sword is the only weapon in Factorio that can be crafted using iron alone—no copper, no silicon, no oil products. It is the sole offensive option before your first electronic circuit exists.
- Because it requires no ammo, the Sword is the only weapon you can use indefinitely without any resupply, making it a perfect emergency tool if your gun runs dry mid-fight.
- The Sword's damage is fixed and does not benefit from any research, upgrade, or module, so its effectiveness never changes from the first swing to the last.
- In the recipe tree, the Sword and the Gun share the same Iron Plate input, meaning a single misplaced craft can steal the exact plate you needed for your first firearm.
