The Steel Gate production chain has three stages. Stage 1: Iron Ore is mined and smelted into Iron Plates in a standard Furnace (1 ore → 1 plate). Stage 2: Iron Plates are fed into a Steel Furnace, where 5 plates are consumed to produce 1 Steel Plate over a 5-second cycle. Stage 3: Steel Plates are routed to a Crafting Machine, where 4 plates are assembled into 1 Steel Gate. The optimal throughput ratio is 1:5:4 across the three stages per gate produced—meaning for every gate, you need 20 Iron Ore and 20 Iron Plates as intermediate stock. In practice, the Steel Furnace is almost always the bottleneck, as its 5-second smelting time is significantly longer than the Furnace's 3-second cycle and the Crafting Machine's 0.5-second craft time. Players typically need 5× as many Steel Furnaces as Crafting Machines to keep the gate line fed. As the factory scales, the chain grows linearly: double the gates, double the furnaces. The Crafting Machine stage rarely needs more than one unit unless you are mass-producing gates for a large perimeter. The real scaling challenge is upstream—ensuring a steady iron ore supply and enough furnace space to keep the steel line from starving. Most players find that by the time they are crafting Steel Gates in volume, their iron ore mining is already automated with drills and inserters, making the furnace count the true limiting factor.
