Rocket Fuel
Fifty bottles of blue fire, and the whole planet becomes a parking lot you leave behind.
Rocket Fuel is the crowning achievement of every Factorio factory — the single item that transforms a sprawling industrial empire into a ticket off the alien world. Brewed in a Chemical Plant from liquid fuel and plastic, it represents the final synthesis of an entire petroleum-processing pipeline stretching back to the black geyser of an oil well. For the player, rocket fuel is both a mechanical goal and a narrative one: fifty units of it are loaded into the rocket, and with that, the crash-landed engineer finally leaves the spitter-infested planet behind. Every conveyor, every inserter, every carefully balanced production line exists to feed this one recipe.

Lore & Background
In the quiet logic of the alien world, the spitter colonies treat the player's factory as a wound — a scar of steel and smoke that bleeds into their territory. The more you build, the more they swarm. And yet the player keeps building, because the only answer to an endless tide of acid-spitting creatures is to stop being on the planet at all. Rocket fuel is that answer distilled into a liquid: the chemical proof that human ingenuity can out-engineer an alien ecosystem. The recipe itself is deceptively simple — pour in liquid fuel, pour in plastic, wait for the blue glow. But the depth behind those two inputs is what makes the factory breathe. Liquid fuel demands a steady stream of petroleum and water, both fed through pipes that snake across the landscape like veins. Plastic drags iron ore into the chemical loop, tying the mining side of the factory to the petroleum side in a way that forces the player to think in systems rather than single belts. The Chemical Plant becomes the heart of the late game, its green liquid sloshing in every tank, its output feeding the one recipe that matters. There is a particular satisfaction in watching the final rocket fuel bottles slide out of the chemical plant and get inserted into the rocket's loading port, one by one, until the counter hits fifty. The spitters circle. The factory hums. And then the sky tears open with a pillar of blue flame, and the world you built is left behind, still running, still perfect, still yours — even as you're no longer there to see it.
In Their Own Story
The chemical plant sputters, then catches. Through the glass viewport, two streams of liquid swirl together — the amber of refined petroleum and the pale grey of polymer — and the mixture shifts, slowly, to a deep electric blue. The inserter on the other side is patient. It has been patient for three in-game hours, watching the oil refinery belch its constant breath of steam, watching the iron miners chip away at the grey rock, watching the oil pump shudder and groan at the base of its well. A bottle slides out. Then another. The counter on the rocket's loading port ticks upward: forty-three, forty-four. Outside, the spitter nest on the ridge is growing another mouth. The factory's lights flicker as a spitter lobs a glob of acid across the pipe network, and the alarm shrieks for two seconds before the turret swivels and the threat is gone. Fifty. The inserter retracts. The rocket's hatch seals with a hydraulic thud that vibrates through the floor plates. For a long moment, nothing happens. Then the engines ignite, and the ground simply stops being the ground.
Reader's Guide
The rocket fuel chain is a three-tier petroleum pipeline. At the base, oil pumps extract crude oil from wells, which feeds oil refineries. Each refinery splits crude oil into petroleum (plus heavy and light oil as byproducts). Petroleum then branches into two chemical-plant recipes: one combining it with water to yield liquid fuel, the other combining it with iron ore to yield plastic. Finally, liquid fuel and plastic are fed together into a chemical plant to produce rocket fuel. The optimal ratio for rocket fuel is 20 liquid fuel to 20 plastic per 5 rocket fuel output, meaning the liquid-fuel and plastic production lines must run at equal throughput. In practice, the bottleneck is almost always the oil refinery: it is the single point that must supply petroleum to both downstream chemical plants simultaneously, and its processing speed is fixed. If your refinery is the choke point, add refineries before adding more chemical plants. As the factory scales, the chain demands a dedicated petroleum district. Expect at minimum two refineries, three to four chemical plants (split between the two recipes), and a robust water supply for the liquid-fuel line. Iron ore for plastic is usually trivial to source, but water pipes are the silent killer — a single broken pipe can idle an entire chemical plant and stall the whole rocket-fuel output. Keep the petroleum district compact, pipe it redundantly, and you will hit fifty bottles before the spitter nests finish their next growth cycle.
Did You Know?
- The Chemical Plant is the only machine that produces rocket fuel, liquid fuel, and plastic, making it the single most critical building in the late-game factory.
- The rocket fuel recipe is the only one in the game that combines two different chemical-plant outputs (liquid fuel and plastic) into a third chemical-plant output, creating a true three-stage chemical loop.
- The rocket itself requires 50 rocket fuel to launch, meaning a player must produce at least ten full batches of the recipe — a small number that belies the enormous factory needed to sustain it.
- The alien creatures (spitters) scale their aggression based on the player's industrial footprint, so the very act of building the rocket-fuel chain accelerates the threat that the rocket is meant to escape.
