Oil Refinery
Where black sludge becomes the lifeblood of a thousand circuits.
The Oil Refinery is a mid-game processing machine that sits at the heart of Factorio's petroleum production chain. It takes raw Crude Oil—pumped up from oil wells scattered across the alien landscape—and distills it into Petroleum, the versatile intermediate fuel that feeds the Chemical Plant for Sulfuric Acid and Plastic Bars. Without it, the factory stalls: no PCBs, no batteries, no rocket fuel, and no path to the launch pad. Visually, the Oil Refinery is a squat, industrial unit crowned by a large cylindrical storage tank, giving it a distinctly different silhouette from the boxier furnaces and assembling machines. It occupies a 2×2 footprint and hums with a slow, rhythmic chug as oil sloshes through its internal chambers. For many players, the first time they watch a single drop of Crude Oil transform into a gleaming Petroleum product is the moment the game shifts from 'survival crafting' to 'industrial engineering.'

Lore & Background
In the world of Factorio, the planet is rich in resources but hostile in intent. Oil wells bubble up from the soil like slow, dark geysers, and the Spitter nests that dot the landscape make every expansion into new territory a negotiation with danger. The Oil Refinery represents the player's first serious step into chemical processing—a discipline that demands not just more iron and copper, but a new kind of spatial thinking. Pipelines must snake across the map, pumping stations must be placed, and the refinery must sit where the flow is logical, not just where the land is flat. The machine itself is unglamorous by design: a utilitarian shell, a riveted tank, a small chimney that puffs faint grey smoke when active. Yet it carries enormous weight in the narrative of the build. Every Plastic Bar in a battery, every Sulfuric Acid drop etched into a circuit board, every litre of Rocket Fuel sloshing in the final tank can be traced back to a single Crude Oil unit passing through this unassuming cylinder. It is the quiet gatekeeper between 'I have a factory' and 'I have a civilization.'
As the player's factory scales, the Oil Refinery becomes a node in a vast web of logistics. Multiple refineries cluster around oil well fields, their tanks catching the low amber light of the alien sun while conveyor belts and pipes converge on them like tributaries feeding a river. The rhythm of their operation—fill, process, empty, repeat—becomes the metronome of the mid-game, a steady industrial heartbeat beneath the chaos of expanding production lines.
In Their Own Story
The night shift at the oil field was never quiet. Maren watched the third Oil Refinery cycle through its first full batch, the cylindrical tank groaning softly as pressure built inside. Crude Oil, thick and black, sloshed from the well pump through a half-kilometre of pipe, arriving in a slow, greasy stream. She tapped the side of the housing with her wrench, listening for the faint tick of the internal valve. Clean. No leaks. The Spitters had been quiet for three days now, their acid spits reduced to a distant sizzle beyond the palisade. She pulled up the production log on her tablet. Two refineries running at full tilt, feeding the Chemical Plant complex two sectors east. Sulfuric Acid levels climbing. Plastic Bar stockpiles ticking up. The rocket fuel line was still a month out, but the math was working. It was always the math, in the end. Not the drama, not the explosions, not the alien things that watched from the treeline with their wet, clicking jaws. Just the math. Input, output, ratio, balance. Maren capped her wrench, wiped the oil from her gloves, and walked back toward the main factory. Behind her, the refineries chugged on, patient and indifferent, turning the planet's black blood into something that could carry a human being off this world. She didn't think about whether the Spitters would understand that. She didn't think about it at all.
Reader's Guide
The oil processing chain in Factorio follows a clear three-stage pipeline. Stage one: Oil Wells pump Crude Oil from underground into a pipe network. Stage two: the Oil Refinery accepts Crude Oil and outputs Petroleum (one unit in, one unit out, roughly ten seconds per cycle). Stage three: the Chemical Plant splits Petroleum into two separate products—Sulfuric Acid and Plastic Bars—each requiring one Petroleum per output. The critical ratio to remember: one Crude Oil yields one Petroleum, but that Petroleum must be allocated to either Sulfuric Acid or Plastic Bars. If your factory needs equal amounts of both, you need two Crude Oil (and therefore two Petroleum) to produce one of each. This 1:2:1 ratio (Crude : Petroleum : combined end product) is the backbone of all oil planning. The bottleneck is almost always the Chemical Plant stage, not the Refinery. Because one Petroleum must be 'spent' on one product or the other, the Chemical Plant effectively halves your throughput compared to the Refinery. Players often find themselves with surplus Petroleum backing up in pipes while the Chemical Plant runs at full capacity. As the factory scales, you will need multiple Oil Refineries clustered around each oil well field, with pipe networks distributing Crude Oil to each unit. The Refinery itself is rarely the limiting factor; it is the downstream demand for Sulfuric Acid (PCBs, Rocket Fuel) and Plastic Bars (batteries, engine units) that drives how many you ultimately need. Plan your Chemical Plant count first, then size your Refinery field to match.
Did You Know?
- Oil wells are a finite, scattered resource on each map, meaning the Oil Refinery's placement is often dictated by where the wells happen to be rather than where the rest of the factory is.
- The Oil Refinery is one of the first machines in the game that processes a liquid via pipes rather than solid items via conveyors, introducing a fundamentally new logistics system to the player.
- Every unit of Rocket Fuel ultimately requires Sulfuric Acid, which requires Petroleum, which requires Crude Oil—making the Oil Refinery an indirect prerequisite for the final rocket launch.
- The Oil Refinery's distinctive cylindrical tank design visually distinguishes it from every other machine in the game, making it easy to spot in a sprawling factory layout.
