Lubricant is a viscous, amber-coloured fluid in Factorio, produced by combining water and petroleum in a Chemical Plant. In the player's mind, the moment the first lubricant pipe snakes across the factory floor marks a threshold: the operation is no longer a hamlet of basic furnaces. It is an industry. Fans often describe the first time they see a full lubricant line—pumps, pipes, chemical plants humming in a row, feeding a wall of electric furnaces that spit out iron plates at a rate that would have seemed like sorcery a few in-game hours earlier. The water pipe, fed by a river that had no name and no end, pulsed in a steady white rhythm. Inside the plant, the two met. No explosion, no drama. Just a slow, golden swirl, the liquid thickening as it cooled in the output pipe. A single drop escaped the seal and ran down the metal housing, catching the blue light of the nearest electric furnace. In that furnace, a slab of iron ore was already glowing white-hot, and the operator—a player three thousand kilometres of conveyor belt away—had not yet noticed the furnace's fuel gauge dipping. The drop hit the ground. The furnace did not care. It would not care for another forty seconds, when the pipe would need to deliver the next batch. And it would. The pipes always delivered. That was the whole point of the pipes.

The Lubricant recipe is straightforward: one unit of Water combined with one unit of Petroleum in a Chemical Plant yields one unit of Lubricant. Water is effectively infinite in Factorio, so the real constraint is petroleum, which must be extracted from Oil Wells via Pumping Stations and routed through pipes to the chemical plant. Downstream, Lubricant feeds two main consumers. First, the Electric Furnace, which consumes it as a fuel alongside electricity to smelt Iron Ore into Iron Plates at a much faster rate than the basic furnace. Second, the Advanced Circuit recipe, which requires one Lubricant alongside copper plates and plastic bars. Advanced Circuits in turn gate access to many late-game items including processing units, heat exchangers, and advanced modules. The typical bottleneck in a growing factory is petroleum throughput: the number of oil wells and pumping stations, and the pipe network's capacity to deliver crude to the chemical plants. Chemical Plant processing speed is the second constraint. As the factory scales, you will find yourself adding more chemical plants in parallel, each needing its own dedicated petroleum feed line. Plan your pipe routing early; a single shared pipe trunk feeding multiple chemical plants is far more efficient than individual lines. A practical rule of thumb: for every Electric Furnace you want running at full speed, budget roughly one chemical plant's worth of lubricant output, and ensure your petroleum pipeline can sustain the combined demand. If Advanced Circuits are also in play, add 10-20% more lubricant capacity. The chain scales linearly, so doubling your furnace wall means doubling your chemical plant row and your oil well count.
