The chain has three stages. Stage 1 (smelting): Iron ore → Iron Plate and Copper ore → Copper Plate, both in a Furnace (stone, steel, or electric). Stage 2 (intermediate assembly): 2 Iron Plates → 1 Iron Gear Wheel, and 1 Iron Plate + 1 Copper Plate → 2 Copper Cables, both in an Assembling Machine. Stage 3 (final assembly): 1 Iron Gear Wheel + 1 Copper Cable → 1 Battery, in an Assembling Machine. The optimal input ratio per battery is 2.5 iron plates and 0.5 copper plates, giving a 5:1 iron-to-copper plate ratio. In practice this means for every copper furnace you run, you need roughly five iron furnaces (or equivalent throughput). The iron plate stage is almost always the bottleneck, since it feeds both the gear-wheel and cable sub-chains. As the factory scales, upgrade furnaces to steel and then electric to increase smelting speed, and add more Assembling Machines to keep the gear, cable, and battery stations fed. The ratio never changes—only the throughput per machine does—so the 5:1 balance must be maintained at every tier. Players who neglect copper early on will find their battery line starved of cable, while those who over-build copper will see idle furnaces and wasted energy.
