Lore & Background
In the alien world the player has landed upon, iron ore lies exposed in rust-red veins across the terrain, and grey stone boulders dot the landscape. But neither is useful in its raw form. The furnace—first a crude stone-brick box, later a sleek steel unit, and ultimately a humming electric appliance—embodies the fundamental act of industrial civilization: imposing human (or player) will upon inert matter through controlled energy. The progression from Stone to Steel to Electric furnace mirrors the broader arc of the game. The Stone Furnace is barely more than a kiln, limited and fuel-hungry, demanding that the player hand-feed coal and watch each plate emerge one by one. Reader's Guide
The furnace handles two core recipes. Iron Ore (mined by a Mining Drill) plus Coal (also mined) yields one Iron Plate. Stone (mined) plus Coal yields one Brick. The required machine is any furnace variant; the Stone Furnace is available almost immediately, the Steel Furnace requires a Steel recipe, and the Electric Furnace requires a working power grid. Upstream, you need at minimum two mining drills (iron ore, coal) and one for stone if you want bricks. The fuel chain is simple: coal is mined directly, no intermediate processing. Downstream, iron plates feed into Steel, Iron Gear Wheels, Electronic Circuits, and virtually every other crafted item. Bricks feed into Stone Foundations and decorative walls. The bottleneck in the early game is almost always the furnace itself—its 1.33/s (Stone) or 2/s (Steel/Electric) smelting rate limits how fast plates appear. As the factory scales, the constraint shifts to fuel supply (coal mining) or, for Electric Furnaces, available kilowatts. A common early ratio is roughly one Mining Drill per furnace, but once you need more than a dozen plates per second, you will want to parallelize: multiple drills feeding multiple furnaces, or upgrade to Steel/Electric variants to double per-unit throughput. Scaling tip: the furnace chain is linear (1 ore → 1 plate), so there is no hidden multiplier to manage. The real scaling challenge is logistics—getting ore and fuel to each furnace without belt congestion. Group furnaces in rows of four to six with a single input belt and a shared output belt to keep the layout clean as the factory grows.
