Flamethrower

One cone of liquid fire, and the biter nest goes quiet.

The Flamethrower is a single-handed, fire-based weapon in Factorio that hurls a wide cone of roaring flame from its nozzle. Available early in the game at the crafting table, it sits between the humble Pistol and the more advanced Rifle in the player's arsenal, offering a distinctive area-of-effect damage profile that makes it particularly effective when swarms of biters pour out of their nests.

Lore & Background

In the sparse, industrial world of Factorio, the player arrives as a lone engineer with little more than a crafting table and a handful of raw materials. The Flamethrower is among the first tools of violence the player can assemble, and its design reflects the game's utilitarian aesthetic: a chunky metal body, a fuel canister, and a wide nozzle that belches a roaring, orange-yellow cone of flame. Unlike the pinpoint accuracy of the Pistol or the sustained fire of the Submachine Gun, the Flamethrower is a blunt instrument—its wide spread makes it less precise at range but devastating when a cluster of biters charges in from multiple directions. The fire damage type it deals is the same one that slowly corrodes biter nests over time, giving the weapon a thematic connection to the player's broader strategy of reclaiming territory from the infested ground.

In Their Own Story

The iron patch was only two hundred metres from the base, but the biter nest in between had grown teeth. Three small ones, clicking and hissing, their pale bodies twitching in the grey afternoon light. She didn't bother with the pistol—too slow, too few shots. She grabbed the Flamethrower from the belt, felt the fuel canister click into place, and squeezed the trigger. The cone roared out, a wall of orange that swallowed the nearest biter whole. The other two scattered, but the flame found them both in a single sweeping arc. They dissolved into smoke and a faint hiss. She let the nozzle cool, watched the last ember drip onto the cracked earth, and walked the two hundred metres to the iron deposit. The factory would grow. The nests would grow back. But not today.

Reader's Guide

The Flamethrower is a single-recipe item, not a multi-stage production chain, so its 'production' is straightforward. Recipe: 2 iron plates, 2 copper plates, 1 stone brick, crafted at a crafting table (or any crafting machine) in a few seconds. The upstream dependencies are minimal—iron ore, copper ore, and stone, all of which are available from the very first minutes of the game. The Flamethrower fuel (its ammunition) is a separate small recipe involving iron plates and copper plates, also crafted at the table. In terms of weapon progression, the Flamethrower slots between the Pistol (2 iron, 2 copper) and the Rifle (which requires steel and electronic circuits). It is typically the player's go-to for clearing the first 3–5 biter nests that guard early iron and copper patches. The bottleneck at this stage is almost always the player's own crafting speed and inventory space rather than any resource scarcity. As the factory scales, the Flamethrower becomes redundant. The Submachine Gun, Shotgun, and eventually the Laser Peeker and Railgun all outperform it in damage-per-second and range. However, because its recipe uses no steel or circuits, it remains a zero-cost fallback if the player somehow loses access to their mid-game crafting infrastructure. In practice, most players craft a handful at the start and never think about it again.
