The Fast Inserter is crafted in a Crafting Machine (or by hand) from 2 iron plates and 2 electronic circuits. Upstream chain: Iron ore is smelted in a Furnace into iron plates (2 ore → 1 plate). Copper ore is smelted the same way (2 ore → 1 plate). One iron plate plus one copper plate combine in a Crafting Machine to yield one electronic circuit. Two of those circuits, plus two more iron plates, produce one Fast Inserter. The full ore requirement per Fast Inserter is roughly 8 iron ore and 4 copper ore, assuming no losses. Downstream, the Fast Inserter is a pure utility item: it does not feed into any further recipe. Its entire value is in the throughput it enables on every other production line. Bottleneck: In early-mid game, the electronic circuit step is the usual choke point, because every circuit also demands a copper plate, and copper smelting lags behind iron. Adding a second furnace dedicated to copper or upgrading to Blast Furnaces early relieves this. The inserter crafting itself is rarely the limiting factor unless you are mass-producing hundreds at once. Scaling: A small factory might need a few dozen Fast Inserters. A mid-game base with parallel iron, copper, and circuit lines can easily require several hundred. A late-game base with dozens of parallel product lines (plastic, steel, red/green circuits, processing units) can push into the thousands. The key is that Fast Inserters are the default choice for most connections; you only upgrade to Stack or Filter Inserters where a specific line genuinely demands higher throughput or selective item handling.
