Step 1 – Extraction: Pumpjacks produce Crude Oil. One pumpjack per oil field is the standard starting ratio; add more as demand grows. Step 2 – First Refinery pass: The Oil Refinery converts 1 Crude Oil into 1 Light Oil + 1 Heavy Oil. This is almost always the chain's bottleneck—the Refinery has one of the longest crafting times in the game, and it can only process one input at a time. Scale Refineries aggressively. Step 3 – Second Refinery pass: Light Oil feeds back into an Oil Refinery to yield 1 Petroleum Resin per Light Oil. You now need roughly as many Refineries for this pass as for the first, doubling your total Refinery count. Step 4 – Chemical Plant: Petroleum Resin → Sulfur (1:1). Sulfur → Sulfuric Acid (1:1). Sulfuric Acid + Water → Sodium Hydroxide (1:1). Finally, Petroleum Resin + Sodium Hydroxide → Plastic (1:1 each). Optimal ratio: For every 1 Crude Oil, you get 1 Petroleum Resin and 1 Heavy Oil. If you need both Sulfur and Plastic from the same Resin pool, plan your Chemical Plant count around the Sulfuric Acid sub-chain, since it consumes the most intermediate steps. Bottleneck: The Oil Refinery, full stop. Its long crafting time means you will almost always need more Refineries than you think. The Chemical Plant is fast by comparison. Scaling: Early game, 2–3 Refineries and 1–2 Chemical Plants suffice. Mid-to-late game, expect dozens of Refineries clustered around pumpjack fields, with Chemical Plants arrayed downstream.
