Reader's Guide
The chain begins at the Oil Pumpjack, which extracts Crude Oil from underground reservoirs. Feed Crude Oil into a Petroleum Refinery to split it into one Light Oil and one Heavy Oil per cycle. Route the Heavy Oil into a Chemical Plant to crack it into one Sulfur and one additional Light Oil. Simultaneously, feed the Sulfur (along with one Water) into a Chemical Plant to produce one Sulfuric Acid. Finally, combine one Light Oil with one Sulfuric Acid in a Chemical Plant to yield one Lubricant. The net ratio per Lubricant is approximately 1 Crude Oil plus 1 Water, with a surplus of 1 Light Oil that can be diverted to Plastic production. The Chemical Plant is the universal bottleneck: three of the four processing steps require it, so you will almost always need more Chemical Plants than Petroleum Refineries. In practice, a 1:2 ratio of Refineries to Chemical Plants works well for a single Lubricant line. As the factory scales, the chain grows linearly. Each additional Lubricant per second demands one more Crude Oil per second from the pumpjacks and one more Water per second. The surplus Light Oil becomes increasingly valuable, feeding the Plastic line needed for Rocket Fuel and other endgame items. Keep an eye on fluid storage buffers between stages; a single clogged pipe or undersized tank can cascade a stall through the entire chain, freezing robot production and halting the whole factory.
