The Combat Robot is a small, autonomous flying drone in Factorio that forms the backbone of the player's automated defense against the ever-encroaching biter hordes. It is one of three specialist robot types—alongside the Logistic Robot and the Construction Robot—fabricated in the Robot Production machine and deployed by the larger carrier Robot that shuttles them across the factory floor. Lore & Background

In the Factorio world, the land beyond the factory's concrete aprons belongs to the biters: a chitinous, hive-minded swarm that treats every exposed pipe and half-built wall as an invitation. Early on, the player fends them off with a hand-held gun and a prayer. But as the factory grows into a labyrinth of conveyors, assemblers, and storage tanks stretching to the horizon, no single human can stand watch over every perimeter. The Combat Robot was conceived as the answer to that problem—a small, expendable, perpetually hovering sentinel that can be mass-produced the same way a belt of iron plates is mass-produced. The elegance of the system lies in its separation of concerns. The Robot Production machine churns out the small drones; the larger Robot carrier ferries them to wherever they are needed; and the drones themselves simply execute a single, brutally simple directive: find the nearest biter, shoot it, repeat. There is no strategy, no retreat, no negotiation. A Combat Robot does not fear. It does not get bored. It does not file a complaint when the biter queen's acid spray melts its housing. It simply goes to work, and when it is destroyed, another one is already rolling off the production line. In Their Own Story

The factory had been quiet for three days. The assemblers ticked their metronomic clicks, the furnaces breathed orange light across the concrete, and the conveyor belts carried their endless cargo of iron and copper toward the storage tanks. Outside the perimeter, the biters had been patient. They always were patient. Then the ground trembled. A cluster of spitter biters crawled from the treeline, mandibles clicking, acid sacs bulging. The player was at the other end of the factory, elbow-deep in a circuit-board schematic, and did not hear them until the first acid glob splattered against a steel plate. But the factory heard them. A low, insectile hum rose from the Robot Production line. Dozens of Combat Robots peeled off the carrier Robots and fanned out in a tight, clicking sphere above the intruders. The first biter went down before it could raise its spitting arm. The second. The third. A spitter lobbed a glob that caught one drone mid-turn; it sizzled, spun, and dropped into the grass, gone. By the time the player finally looked up from the schematic, the swarm was a thin, lazy circle, picking at the last twitching biter. The factory hummed on. The Combat Robots did not celebrate. They simply waited for the next one.

Reader's Guide

The Combat Robot production chain begins with raw ore. Iron Ore is smelted into Iron Plates, Copper Ore into Copper Cables, and Sand is processed into Silicon. These feed into Electronic Circuits, then Advanced Circuits, and finally Processing Units—the electronic backbone of every robot in the game. The Combat Robot itself is assembled in the Robot Production machine from a small set of these electronic components (typically one or two Circuits and one Processing Unit, depending on the exact recipe version). Critically, the Combat Robot is useless without its partner: the Robot (carrier). The carrier is produced in the same Robot Production machine from a similar electronic recipe. You need both in roughly equal numbers for the system to function, since each carrier can only ferry a limited number of small robots. The bottleneck in most mid-game factories is the Processing Unit line, as it requires two Advanced Circuits plus an Iron Plate, making it the most component-hungry stage. The Robot Production machine itself is also a common chokepoint, as it has a fixed production speed and cannot be easily parallelised without dedicating more assemblers and power. As the factory scales, the optimal approach is to dedicate an entire production line to the electronic chain, feed it into two or more Robot Production machines, and ensure the carrier-to-drone ratio stays balanced. Power consumption becomes the real constraint at scale: every Robot Production machine, every assembler in the circuit chain, and every furnace drawing ore all pull from the same grid. A well-planned solar or nuclear array is what keeps the drones flying when the biters come in waves.
