Reader's Guide
The chain has three smelting stages. Stage 1: Coal Ore is smelted into Coal in any furnace (Stone, Steel, or Electric). Stage 2: Iron Ore is smelted into Iron Plates in any furnace. Stage 3: Five Iron Plates are smelted into one Steel in a Steel Furnace, which itself must be crafted from Iron Plates (and is unlocked early in the technology tree). The optimal production ratio is straightforward: for every 1 Steel output, you need 5 Iron Plates, which requires 5 Iron Ore and 5 units of fuel. Coal production is independent but must outpace total fuel demand across ALL furnaces in the factory, not just the iron line. As your factory scales, coal consumption grows with every additional furnace, belt, and machine, so coal mining must scale proportionally. The typical bottleneck is coal supply. Early on, a single mining drill and a few furnaces suffice, but as you add more iron smelting, plastic production, and general fuel needs, coal quickly becomes the scarcest input. Iron Plate smelting is rarely the limiting factor unless you have not yet automated ore mining. Steel production itself is fast and seldom bottlenecks once you have a reasonable number of Steel Furnaces. The chain scales linearly: double your Steel Furnaces and you double steel output, but you must also double iron plate throughput and ensure coal fuel keeps pace across the entire factory.
