The Battery-to-Engine Unit chain is one of the foundational production pipelines in Factorio, bridging the gap between basic smelting and the oil-processing infrastructure. It transforms raw iron, copper, and crude oil into the Engine Unit, a versatile component that powers Electric Engines and, by extension, a wide array of upgraded machinery. For the player, mastering this chain marks the transition from a simple mining-and-smelting loop into a true multi-resource factory. Because it sits at the intersection of three distinct resource streams—iron, copper, and petroleum—this chain is a natural stress-test of logistics, balancing, and machine allocation. In the sparse, rust-streaked world the player inherits, the Engine Unit is less a manufactured part and more a declaration of intent. Net raw inputs per Engine Unit are 3 Iron Plates, 2 Copper Plates, and 1 Light Oil (from 1 Crude Oil in the Oil Refinery). Machines involved: Smelters produce Iron and Copper Plates; Assembling Machines produce Copper Cable, Electronic Circuit, Battery, and the final Engine Unit; the Oil Refinery turns Crude Oil into Light Oil (plus Heavy Oil as a by-product). All assembly steps use the same machine type, so they compete for the same pool of Assembler slots. The typical bottleneck is Assembler capacity. You need four distinct assembly recipes (Cable, Circuit, Battery, Engine) all running simultaneously, and early Assemblers are slow. The Oil Refinery can also bottleneck if you under-invest in oil-pumping infrastructure, since it is a separate machine type with its own throughput ceiling. Scaling: the chain is strictly linear.
