Small Biter
Tiny, spiky, and swarming—the first teeth the wilderness shows you.
The Small Biter is the lowest-ranked, most numerous of the biter creatures that populate the untamed wilderness of the Factorio world. A small, rounded, spiky ground-dweller, it is the first hostile entity most players face when their expanding base begins to encroach on biter territory. Individually fragile and slow, Small Biters make up for their weakness in sheer numbers, pouring out of the earliest biter nests in relentless little waves. Within the broader biter ecosystem, the Small Biter functions as the foundational tier—the baseline threat from which every larger, more dangerous biter type escalates. It is the creature that teaches a new player the fundamental lesson of the game: the wilderness here is not passive scenery, but a living, reactive population that will push back the moment your furnaces and belts cross into its territory.

Lore & Background
In the ecology of the Factorio world, biter nests are not mere decorations on a map; they are living hubs of a self-sustaining creature population. The Small Biter, as the smallest and most abundant member of that population, fills the ecological niche of a fast-reproducing, low-investment organism. Nests that produce only Small Biters are the most common feature of the early wilderness, dotting the terrain in clusters of one or two spiky domes surrounded by a ring of smaller spire structures. The relationship between the player and the Small Biter is, in a sense, the central conflict of the entire game compressed into its simplest form. The player needs resources; the biters need their territory. The moment a wall, a belt, or a single furnace is placed within a nest's radius, the nest stirs. Small Biters crawl out in small groups, probe the perimeter, and if unimpeded, will chip away at exposed infrastructure. They are not intelligent in the way a soldier is intelligent—they do not plan flanking maneuvers or coordinate artillery—but their persistence and numbers make them a genuine early-game hazard for an unprepared player. As the player's base grows and their technology advances, the biter ecosystem responds in kind. Nests that once produced only Small Biters may eventually begin spawning Medium Biters, Big Biters, and even the terrifying Biter Wardens. Yet the Small Biter never truly disappears. It remains the base layer of every biter population, the constant reminder that the wilderness is watching, waiting, and always ready to bite back.
In Their Own Story
The first furnace was a mistake. You'd seen the little spiky dome on the minimap, noted it, and thought, *I'll go around it later.* But the copper vein was right there, and the iron was right there, and the later became now. You placed the furnace. You placed the belt. You placed the first wall, because you'd read the forum post about biters. The dome shuddered. A thin crack split its surface, and out came the first one—small, round, bristling with dark spikes, moving with a slow, deliberate crawl. Then another. Then six more, tumbling over one another in a chitinous heap. They reached the wall and began to push, to grind, to tear at the metal with a sound like a nail dragged across a tin roof. You raised your rifle, feeling absurdly overpowered, and put the first one down with a single shot. The others kept coming. By the time you'd cleared the swarm, the furnace was dented and the belt was sparking. You stood in the orange glow of the smelting chamber, listening to the silence that followed, and understood: this was the first of many conversations with the wilderness, and it had just opened its mouth.
Reader's Guide
Appearance: The Small Biter is a compact, roughly spherical creature covered in short, dark spikes, with a low, wide stance. It is the smallest biter in the game and is easily distinguishable from larger tiers by its size and lack of the elongated body or spitting apparatus seen in higher types. Attack pattern: Small Biters deal contact (melee) damage. They crawl toward the nearest player structure or character and deal a small amount of damage per hit, requiring repeated contact to destroy a single wall or machine. They do not attack from a distance and have no projectile or ranged capability. Spawn conditions: Small Biters emerge from the earliest and most common biter nests—small spiky domes often accompanied by one or two smaller spire structures. A nest will begin spawning Small Biters when the player places any infrastructure within its trigger radius. Spawns continue as long as the player remains in the area and the nest is not destroyed. Interaction with infrastructure: Small Biters target the nearest player-built object—walls, belts, furnaces, and the player character itself. They will chew through walls first if present, making walls the primary early-game defense against them. Countermeasures: A single rifle or even a well-timed punch can dispatch a Small Biter quickly. Walls, turrets (once available), and simply maintaining distance are effective. Destroying the source nest permanently stops spawns from that location. Evolution stage: The Small Biter is the base tier. It is present from the very start of the game and does not require any progression to appear. Higher-tier biters (Medium, Big, Spitter, Warden) represent later escalation stages of the same ecosystem. Role in the ecosystem: As the lowest tier, Small Biters serve as the numerical backbone of biter swarms. They are the first line of defense for a nest and the most common biter a player will encounter throughout the entire game.
Did You Know?
- Small Biter nests are the most common biter structure on a standard map, often appearing in clusters of one to three domes in the early-game area around the player's starting location.
- A Small Biter can be killed with a single punch, though it requires multiple hits—making it the only biter tier where the player's bare hands are a viable (if slow) weapon.
- Small Biters do not target the player character preferentially; they will attack any exposed infrastructure, meaning a lone belt or furnace left unguarded can be destroyed even if the player is standing safely behind a w
- The biter ecosystem is reactive: destroying a nest removes its Small Biter spawns permanently, but building near an intact nest will always trigger new spawns, making the choice to clear or avoid a nest a recurring early
