Large Biter

When the nest stops sending scouts and starts sending the big ones, your walls better be ready.

The Large Biter is the third-tier predator in Factorio's biter hierarchy, a hulking, spiky ground creature that emerges from biter nests once surrounding pollution has crossed a higher threshold than that required for its smaller kin. Where small and medium biters test the edges of a player's industrial footprint, the Large Biter is a full-bodied assault: it barrels directly at production infrastructure, tearing through belts, assemblers, and storage with a sustained, heavy bite that can cripple a mid-game layout in seconds. It occupies a critical rung in the biter ecosystem. Larger and considerably more durable than a Medium Biter, it forces players to invest in layered defenses—walls, turret coverage, and careful nest management—before pushing further into polluted biomes. For many players, the first Large Biter that shreds a conveyor line is the moment Factorio stops being a resource-gathering puzzle and starts demanding genuine strategic planning.

Lore & Background

In the ecology of the Factorio world, biter nests are not merely collections of hostile creatures; they function as territorial immune systems. The pollution generated by smelters, furnaces, and other industrial processes is interpreted by the nest as an incursion, and the nest responds by escalating the size and number of the creatures it dispatches. The Large Biter represents the nest's 'heavy infantry'—a creature bred, in the player's experience, to be tough enough to survive a direct hit from a turret and still deliver a killing blow to a production building. Visually, the Large Biter is unmistakable even in the game's stylized pixel aesthetic: a broad, low-slung body bristling with dark, angular protrusions, a wide maw that snaps shut on whatever structure it latches onto, and a gait that is slower than a Medium Biter's but far more deliberate. It does not circle or feint. It picks a target—usually the nearest belt, wall segment, or machine—and commits. That single-mindedness is what makes it so dangerous in numbers; a swarm of Large Biters can overwhelm a turret grid that would easily handle a dozen mediums. Players who have cleared early nests and begun expanding into the mid-game biomes often describe the Large Biter as the 'real' biter. The smaller ones were warnings. The Giant Biter is the apocalypse. The Large Biter is the daily grind of keeping an industrial complex alive while the land itself keeps trying to eat it.

In Their Own Story

The night shift at Nest 7 had been quiet for three days. Mira kept her eyes on the radar overlay, watching the green pollution halo pulse around the smelter cluster like a slow heartbeat. Then the halo flickered, darkened, and a new icon bloomed at the nest's edge—bigger than the last, the silhouette unmistakable. A Large Biter. It peeled away from the cluster of mediums that had been gnawing at the eastern wall, and it walked. Not scurried. Walked. Each step a deliberate, heavy shift of weight across the cracked ground. Mira's fingers found the turret-control panel. Two flak cannons, already aimed. The biter's maw opened, and the first belt segment in the line went dark. She exhaled, lined up the second shot, and whispered the words every Factorio player eventually says to themselves: 'Not today, you ugly thing.' The cannon fired. The biter staggered. It did not stop walking.

Reader's Guide

Appearance: The Large Biter is a broad, low-profile creature with a dark, angular body covered in sharp protrusions. It is noticeably larger than a Medium Biter, with a wider maw and a heavier, slower gait. In the game's top-down pixel style, it reads as a dark, spiky blob with a distinct head and a wide biting mouth. Attack pattern: It selects the nearest player structure—belts, walls, machines, storage—and latches on, delivering repeated bite damage until the structure is destroyed. It does not target the player avatar directly. Its movement is slower than a Medium Biter's, but it is far more durable, meaning it can survive multiple turret hits before dying. Spawn conditions: Large Biters emerge from biter nests once the cumulative pollution in the surrounding area exceeds a threshold higher than that required for Medium Biters. Clearing nearby nests and reducing pollution output slows or halts their spawning. They appear in the mid-game biomes as the player expands. Interaction with infrastructure: A single Large Biter can destroy a belt segment or a single machine in a matter of seconds. In groups, they can overwhelm turret coverage and reach inner production buildings. They are the primary reason players build multi-layer walls and dedicated turret corridors around nest perimeters. Countermeasures: Layered walls (at least two to three thick) to slow them down, flak or laser turrets positioned in covered kill-zones, and keeping pollution output low by using electric smelters or placing production further from nests. Killing the surrounding Medium and Small Biters first reduces the pressure and gives turrets time to focus fire on the Large Biter. Role in the biter ecosystem: The Large Biter is the nest's mid-tier enforcer. It sits between the expendable Medium Biter scouts and the rare, devastating Giant Biter, serving as the sustained pressure that keeps a player's mid-game expansion honest.
