Train Stop

A tiny housing on the rails that tells a thousand-ton train exactly where to stand still.

The Train Stop is a small, unassuming piece of rail infrastructure in Factorio that serves as the beating heart of any serious logistics network. Placed directly on a rail track, it gives a train a designated point where it can halt, load cargo, offload goods, or simply wait for its next scheduled departure. Without it, trains would be forever in motion—useful for hauling, but useless for actually delivering anything to a factory floor. Though it looks like little more than a compact housing with a single input and a single output slot, the Train Stop is the glue that binds the entire rail system together. Paired with signal lights and a well-planned schedule, a handful of these stops can transform a sprawling network of tracks into a precise, automated distribution grid that feeds every inserter, furnace, and assembler in your empire.

Lore & Background

In the early days of the alien-contaminated surface, the first settlers relied on hand-cranked carts and muscle to move ore from the quarry to the smelter. The introduction of the rail system changed everything, but raw speed without a way to stop was just a dangerous blur of steel and sparks. The Train Stop was the quiet answer: a small, circuit-driven housing that could be bolted onto the track and told, in the simplest of terms, 'this is where you pause.'

Over time, the humble stop became the focal point of every major settlement. Factories were built around them. Loading bays, conveyor belts, and stacks of chests sprang up on either side. The stop itself never changed—no blinking lights, no fanfare—yet every engineer who walked past knew that this small device was the reason the assembly lines never starved. It was the period at the end of the sentence that made the whole paragraph mean something. In the broader story of the alien invasion, the Train Stop represents the quiet, unglamorous backbone of human persistence. While the player fights alien spawners and builds rocket silos, it is the unremarkable click of a train settling onto a stop, the soft hiss of an inserter depositing a stack of plastic bars, that keeps the war effort fed. No monument is ever raised to it. No one writes a ballad. But every factory, every lab, every rocket stage owes its existence to that small housing on the track.

In Their Own Story

The night shift was quiet. Mara stood at the edge of the loading platform, her breath fogging in the cold, watching the headlight sweep the curve ahead. The freight train—sixteen wagons of refined iron and a single car of electronic circuits—rounded the bend and began its long deceleration. The clatter of wheels on the track slowed to a rhythmic, almost musical tap. It settled onto the stop with a soft metallic sigh, the couplings giving one final creak before going still. The inserter arms on the platform shuddered to life, grabbing the first stack of iron plates and feeding them into the waiting chest. Mara checked her tablet: next stop, the steelworks, in four minutes. She had exactly enough time to grab a coffee from the thermos on the platform bench. The train sat there, patient and enormous, waiting for its next instruction. And Mara, for one small moment, allowed herself to feel the quiet pride of a system that simply worked—no alien interference, no power outage, no red signal light glowing where it shouldn't. Just the click of a stop, the hum of an inserter, and the steady, reliable pulse of a factory that refused to die.

Reader's Guide

The Train Stop is a passive infrastructure item placed directly on a rail track tile. Its sole function is to give a train a valid point at which it can halt. It provides one input slot and one output slot, allowing a train to load items into its cargo wagons or unload them to a connected chest or belt. The stop itself has no power draw, no processing speed, and no throughput rating; loading and unloading speed is determined by the train's own mechanics and the inserters or belts on the platform. It is unlocked by the Logistic Train technology in the Logistics tab. Once available, it is crafted from basic materials (iron plate, copper cable, and an electronic circuit) and found in the Infrastructure crafting tab. Key quirks and pairing notes: A train will only stop at a Train Stop if it has a reason to—either it is scheduled to that stop as a destination, or it needs to load/unload cargo there. It will simply roll past an idle stop. For routing, pair the stop with Red and Yellow signal lights placed on the tracks just before and after it. A red light before the stop prevents a following train from entering the section while the first is still loading, preventing collisions. Multiple stops can be spaced along a line to create multi-stop routes. The stop occupies a single rail tile, so it does not block the track for other trains once the occupying train has departed. In a production line, the Train Stop is the interface between the rail network and the factory floor. Place it adjacent to a chest or a row of inserters, schedule your train to stop there, and the loop is complete: raw materials arrive, processed goods leave, and the line keeps turning.
