Furnace 10
The furnace that isn't: a fan myth born from misreading the real four-tier smelting line.
Furnace 10 is not a recognized technology, item, or blueprint in Factorio's official content. The game's furnace progression consists of four distinct tiers—Stone Furnace, Steel Furnace, Electric Furnace, and Blast Furnace—none of which carry a numerical designation. This entry exists as a fan-community placeholder to address recurring speculation, mod references, and mislabelled wiki searches that conflate the furnace line with a numbered series. Because no such item appears in the base game, any 'stats' or 'lore' attached to a Furnace 10 would be pure invention. What follows is therefore framed as a meta-entry: it catalogues the real furnace progression, notes where the 'Furnace 10' label surfaces in fan discourse, and clarifies what the game actually offers at the top of the smelting chain.

Lore & Background
In the Factorio universe, the player arrives on a barren asteroid and must bootstrap an industrial civilisation from raw stone. The furnace line is the first taste of that progression: a crude stone kiln that turns iron ore into ingots, a sturdier steel variant, an electric furnace that decouples smelting from fuel logistics, and finally the Blast Furnace, a towering structure that processes ore in parallel streams and represents the apex of pre-space-age metallurgy. Each step is a visible, tactile upgrade in the landscape of the player's growing factory. The label 'Furnace 10' has no grounding in this narrative. It appears occasionally in community forums, speedrun commentary, and third-party mod descriptions where authors assign arbitrary numbers to custom items. Because Factorio's item IDs are internal and not displayed as sequential integers to the player, a casual search for 'furnace 10' sometimes surfaces misindexed fan wikis or mod pages that borrow the phrasing. None of these represent official content. What fans do love is the *feeling* of the furnace progression: the moment the first iron ingot drops, the satisfying hum of an electric furnace array, the industrial grandeur of a blast-furnace district. That emotional arc is real and widely celebrated, even if the specific name 'Furnace 10' is not.
In Their Own Story
The asteroid wind carried grit across the flat basalt plain. Mara wiped the dust from her goggles and watched the new structure settle into the ground—another tier, another step up the ladder. The stone kiln had been enough for the first week. The steel one, enough for the first month. Now the electric furnace hummed to life, its blue glow cutting through the ochre haze, and somewhere down the line a conveyor belt shuddered as the first batch of iron ingots tumbled out, heavy and warm. She keyed the blueprint into the inserter arm and watched the ghost outline pulse. One more row. One more tier. The factory was still small, still fragile, still hers. The wind picked up, and the furnace ticked as it cooled, a sound like a heartbeat in a world that had no heart at all.
Reader's Guide
Because Furnace 10 does not exist in the base game, there is no research cost, prerequisite chain, or unlock condition to describe. What does exist is a four-step smelting progression:
Stone Furnace is available from the start (no research). Steel Furnace requires basic metallurgy research. Electric Furnace requires advanced circuit and electric engine prerequisites. Blast Furnace, added in Update 2.0, sits at the top and requires advanced manufacturing research. If you encounter 'Furnace 10' in a mod, speedrun setup, or fan wiki, it is almost certainly a community-authored item with no bearing on the vanilla tech tree. Blueprints in Factorio work by copying a region of placed items (Ctrl+B) and pasting them elsewhere (Ctrl+V) or sharing them via the in-game blueprint library. A furnace blueprint would simply replicate the furnace structure and its connected inserters; it does not transfer research or unlock new tiers. For progression advice: focus on upgrading your furnace line as soon as the prerequisite tech is affordable. Each tier roughly doubles smelting throughput and changes the fuel or power requirements, which cascades into your entire logistics layout. The Blast Furnace in particular changes the geometry of your factory because it processes multiple ore types simultaneously, reducing the number of separate smelting lines you need.
Did You Know?
- Factorio has exactly four furnace types in the base game (Stone, Steel, Electric, Blast); none are numbered, so 'Furnace 10' has no official referent.
- The Blast Furnace, added in Update 2.0 (2022), is the most advanced smelter and can process multiple ore types in a single structure, a first in the game's furnace line.
- Factorio's internal item IDs are sequential integers, but they are not displayed to players and do not correspond to a 'Furnace 1' through 'Furnace 10' naming scheme.
- The game's blueprint system lets players share factory layouts, but blueprints only replicate placed items and connections—they never unlock or transfer researched technologies.
