Military 24

The last gear in the war machine, where the factory's fury reaches its full expression.

Military 24 is a late-tier technology in Factorio's military technology tree, representing one of the final rungs in the game's linear chain of military research. It sits at the tail end of a long prerequisite sequence that begins with Military 1 and progresses step by step through increasingly advanced defensive and offensive capabilities. Reaching this tier signals that the player has built a substantial industrial base, accumulated diverse science packs, and is deep into the mid-to-late game. As a military-category technology, Military 24 is part of the same structural family as its predecessors: each tier requires the one before it, forming an unbroken chain that gates access to progressively more powerful turret types and military items. It is a milestone that most players encounter after establishing automated production lines, power infrastructure, and a well-defended factory perimeter.

Lore & Background

In the sprawling, ever-expanding factory that the player constructs across the alien landscape, the military technologies represent the slow, deliberate escalation of defensive capability. What begins with a single gun turret guarding a mining outpost grows, over dozens of research milestones, into a layered fortress of automated firepower. Each military tier in the chain adds a new tool to the arsenal, and by the time the player unlocks Military 24, the surrounding terrain is a dense lattice of turrets, walls, and kill-zones that repel waves of enemies without a single manual input. The military chain is deliberately linear: there is no branching, no skipping, no alternative path. This design choice reinforces the feeling that the factory's war capability is a single, inevitable progression—each turret type a natural consequence of the last. The player does not choose between laser and railgun at tier ten; they earn both, in sequence, as the research tree demands. By tier twenty-four, the factory is no longer merely producing goods. It is a self-sustaining war machine, and the alien creatures that once threatened a lonely mining rig now face an automated defense grid of staggering density. Fans often describe the late military tiers as the moment the game's tone shifts from survival to domination. The factory stops being a vulnerable industrial site and becomes an impenetrable stronghold, its periphery a no-man's-land of interlocking turret fire. Military 24, as the capstone of this chain, is less a single unlock than a declaration: the factory has finished its transformation into a fortress.

In Their Own Story

The signal light on the research bench blinked amber, then settled into the steady green of completion. Military 24. She set down her coffee—cold, hours old—and watched the new turret icon appear in the item list with the quiet satisfaction of a general receiving a final order. Around her, the factory hummed its endless industrial hymn: conveyors clicking, assemblators clanking, the low thrum of an electric network carrying gigawatts of power into the grid. She walked the perimeter on foot, boots crunching on the grey stone, and watched the new turrets track their idle sweeps across the treeline. Beyond the outermost wall, the terrain was a graveyard of broken enemies, their remains long since composted into the alien soil. The factory stretched in every direction, a geometric sprawl of pipes and belts and blinking lights, and at its heart, the research lab continued its quiet, tireless work. She smiled, turned back toward the production lines, and began planning the next expansion. The war, if it could be called that, was well won. But the factory never stopped growing.

Reader's Guide

Military 24 sits at the very end of Factorio's military technology chain. To research it, you must have already completed Military 23, which in turn required Military 22, and so on all the way back to Military 1. This makes the military tree a strict linear prerequisite: you cannot skip or reorder any tier. The research cost is paid in science packs, and by this point in the game you will typically be producing a mix of chemical, production, military, and possibly atomic or data science packs depending on how far you have progressed in other branches. In practical terms, unlocking Military 24 means you now have access to the full complement of turret types available in the base game. Turrets are placed on the ground, powered by the electric network, and automatically engage enemies within their range. They do not require manual targeting or ammo loading in most cases, making them a low-maintenance but highly effective defense layer. Blueprints in Factorio are a separate system from the tech tree. You can save any construction you have built as a blueprint, then paste it elsewhere in your factory or share the blueprint code with other players. Blueprints do not require you to have researched the items they contain at the time of pasting (you must have them in your inventory or be able to produce them), but they do not bypass the tech tree—items you cannot yet craft or obtain cannot be placed from a blueprint. Community-shared blueprints for turret layouts, kill-zones, and factory perimeters are a popular way to learn efficient defensive designs without building them from scratch.
