Military 18
The last plate of armor before you launch into the sky.
Military 18 is the final technology in Factorio's linear military research chain, representing the last incremental armor upgrade a player can acquire before the game's victory condition is met. It sits at the very end of a long, methodical progression that begins with the first gun turret and spirals outward through spike turrets, flamethrowers, and a dozen-plus tiers of personal armor, each one a small but meaningful increase in survivability against the alien invaders that swarm the factory's borders. In practice, Military 18 is the reward for a player who has invested heavily in defensive infrastructure and is now in the late-game grind toward the space rocket launch. It does not introduce a new weapon or turret type; rather, it pushes the player's personal damage resistance to its maximum, ensuring that even the densest raider swarms become a manageable nuisance rather than an existential threat.

Lore & Background
The military research chain in Factorio is deliberately linear and unglamorous. There is no branching, no alternate paths—just one technology after another, each a small step up in the same two axes: turret lethality and personal resilience. The early entries, Military 1 through 3, introduce the gun turret, the spike turret, and the flamethrower, giving the player a functional perimeter defense. From Military 4 onward, the chain becomes almost entirely about armor, with each tier shaving a small percentage off the damage the player takes from raider bullets, spikes, and flame. By the time a player reaches Military 18, the factory sprawls across the map in a dense lattice of conveyor belts, assemblers, and turret clusters. The raider attacks that once felt like genuine threats—waves of red-and-black creatures pouring over the factory walls—have become a rhythmic, almost meditative background hum. The player, now encased in the thickest armor the game offers, walks through the smoke and sparks of a mid-battle turret engagement with barely a flinch. Military 18 is not the technology that saves the factory; it is the one that lets the player walk through the chaos and keep building. The game's narrative frames these alien invasions as an escalating siege, but the player's experience is one of patient, industrial counter-pressure. Each armor tier is a quiet declaration: I will not be stopped. Military 18 is the final, quiet declaration before the rocket lifts off and the story ends.
In Their Own Story
The alarm klaxon had been screaming for eleven seconds when Kael noticed the gap in the northern turret line. A cluster of red raiders had chewed through the last gun turret, and now they were pouring into the iron-plate production line like a slow, chittering flood. He did not panic. He had not panicked in a long time. He keyed his armor status on the HUD—Armor 15, the number glowing steady in the corner of his vision—and felt the familiar, almost boring confidence settle into his shoulders. A raider's bullet struck his chest plate and the damage number that flickered across the screen was so small it was almost an insult. He walked forward, through the smoke, through the sparks, through the bodies of creatures that had once terrified him in the early days when a single spike could drop him in two hits. Behind him, the factory hummed. Assemblers clattered. Conveyors carried their endless cargo of iron, copper, and plastic toward the rocket parts that would, in a few more hours, carry him out of this world entirely. The raiders would keep coming. They always kept coming. But tonight, they were just noise. He reached the damaged turret, swapped the broken module for a fresh one from his inventory, and watched it power back up with a soft whir. The swarm broke against the new line of fire. He turned and walked back toward the launch pad, his boots crunching on gravel, the factory's lights painting the dusk in bands of amber and blue. One more armor tier. One more hour. Then the sky would open, and the siege would be someone else's problem.
Reader's Guide
Military 18 is a technology, not a blueprint, so it does not appear in the blueprint save/share system. It is researched at a lab cluster and, once unlocked, permanently grants the player Armor 15—the highest personal damage-reduction tier in the base game. The prerequisite is strictly Military 17, which itself requires Military 16, and so on back down the chain to Military 1. There is no branching or alternative path; the entire military tree is a single linear sequence. In terms of progression, Military 18 sits firmly in the late game. Most players encounter it after they have already built out their core production (iron, copper, steel, plastics, and often oil processing) and are in the process of assembling rocket parts. The research cost is modest relative to the science packs the player is generating at that stage, so it is rarely a bottleneck. The real cost is time: the player must have already progressed through all seventeen prior military techs, which means they have been fighting raiders for a significant portion of their playthrough. Because it is the final military tech, it often serves as a small milestone marker. Players who have been grinding toward the space rocket launch will notice the tech tree's military column finally filling up, a quiet signal that the defensive phase of the game is complete and the remaining hours are purely about production and the launch sequence itself.
Did You Know?
- The entire military tech chain in Factorio is strictly linear—there is no branching, and each technology requires the one immediately before it, making Military 18 the 18th in an unbroken sequence.
- Armor in Factorio does not add a visible shield bar or health pool; it simply reduces the percentage of damage the player takes from raider attacks, so higher tiers make the same hit feel weaker rather than adding extra
- Military 18 is the last technology in the military column of the tech tree in the base game, meaning no further military research is available after it is unlocked.
- The three turret-introducing technologies (gun turret, spike turret, flamethrower) all appear in the first three slots of the military chain, after which the remaining fifteen entries are exclusively armor upgrades.
