In the Factorio world, industrialists climb a well-defined ladder of smelting technology. The Stone Furnace is the humble beginning, fed by coal and producing iron plates, copper plates, and steel in modest batches. The Steel Furnace, unlocked once the player has mastered steel production, offers a meaningful speed bump. The Electric Furnace, requiring advanced circuit boards, represents the apex of vanilla smelting—faster still, and powered by the electrical grid rather than solid fuel. At no point in the game's progression, its research tree, or its item database does a "Furnace 8" appear. The naming convention is material-based, not ordinal. This likely means the term "Furnace 8" is either a fan-coined joke, a misremembered mod name, or a placeholder label from an early development build that never shipped. The Factorio community, known for its encyclopedic wiki and modding culture, has no widely accepted reference to an eighth-generation furnace. What the designation does evoke, however, is the aspirational dream every Factorio player has: a smelting tier beyond the Electric Furnace, perhaps powered by nuclear fuel or some exotic energy source, that would make the current production lines look quaint. That dream lives in modding forums and speedrun theorycrafting, but it remains firmly outside canon.

He'd built the whole grid by hand, no blueprints, no cheats, just four years of incremental upgrades from a single stone furnace in a dirt patch. His younger sister, still learning the ropes on a fresh save, called over the comms channel. "Hey, I saw a YouTube video about a Furnace 8. Is that real?"

Kael laughed, the sound swallowed by the clatter of inserter arms. "No. There's no Furnace 8. There's stone, steel, electric. That's the whole ladder."

"But what if you just… kept going?"

He looked at the electric furnaces, their orange glow painting the concrete in warm stripes. "Then you'd be writing your own game," he said. "And that's a whole different save."

Reader's Guide

Because "Furnace 8" is not a technology or blueprint in Factorio's canon, there is no research cost, prerequisite chain, or unlock condition to document. The actual furnace progression works as follows. Stone Furnace is available from the start of every new game. It smelts iron ore, copper ore, and (with the Steel recipe) iron plates into steel, using coal as fuel. No research is required. Steel Furnace unlocks after researching the Steel technology. It requires steel plates and iron plates to craft, and offers a faster smelting speed than the Stone Furnace. It still uses solid fuel (coal, wood, or peat). Electric Furnace unlocks after researching Advanced Circuit Board. It requires advanced circuit boards, electric engines, and iron plates. It draws power from the electrical grid and smelts faster than the Steel Furnace. It is the final furnace tier in the base game. Regarding blueprints: any furnace can be placed into a blueprint via the blueprint book (B key by default). Blueprints can be saved to the local machine, shared via the Factorio online service as a code, or pasted into a blueprint string for community sharing. A blueprint for a furnace will place the furnace item but will not include its fuel or power connections—those must be wired or inserted separately. No community design or speedrun strategy references a "Furnace 8" as a buildable object.
